when i enter my maths 2u marks, the SAM says they are scaled up (well it has a little +, which i asssume means up...), but the scaled mark out of fifty is actually LOWER than my original mark...how exactly does that work? i enter 92 as my alligned mark, and it comes out with 42 as my scaled mark, yet there's a + sign...
can anyone explain this to me, am i reading the SAM wrong?

also what does the uai contribution column refer to?

cheers, L

You need to know the difference between aligned marks, raw marks and scaled marks.
ALIGNED MARKS are those you enter, and they are the marks you receive from the Board of Studies.
RAW MARKS are those which are are not revealed to the public nor on the Student Assessment Modeller at the moment and these marks are used for scaling.
SCALED MARKS come from alteration of raw marks and this can be an increase or decrease from the original raw mark. These marks are what you see in the "UAI contrib" column.

In other words the marks you enter are the ALIGNED MARKS. These marks are not used for scaling. The RAW MARKS are used for scaling and that is where the scaling up comes in and the SCALED MARK results from this.

The Student Assessment Modeller was designed to roughly convert aligned marks to scaled marks in accordance to rank.

What seems like a load of bull to me is complaints from students who clearly haven't paid any attention to the warning which says "your trial HSC and school assessment marks may be very different to your aligned HSC marks".

If you put the wrong marks in, the wrong result is going to come out.

Not only that, but there are differences between the strength of schools and the way they mark their assessments.

you cannnot put ur trial marks in because it will NOT be the same as ur aligned marks (IE 80% in a trial for 4U math will have an aligned mark of over 90). instead play around with the percetile ur in and change the mark until it compares to the percentile ur in with your school rank. remenber your percentile may be highe or lower depending on how well your school, as a whole goes, in the HSC (ie top 25% at james ruse may be top 10% in the state.)
