Is transfering like wasting a year? (1 Viewer)

i am currently year 12 but don't really understand credit transfering, but my main question is.........

say if you wanted to get into aeronautical engineering but you didn't reach the uai cut off, and had to do a credit transfer from studying 1 year of civil engineering.

Isn't it like wasting 1 year's money and time once you get into the desired course? since they are completely unrelated subjects or whatever....

thank you for your help

Back when I was uni, the engineering degrees usually have a common first year that all engineering students do which consist of all the core/basic engineering subjects. Then from second year, the different engineering students branch off to their respective engineering degrees. So if you want to transfer after first year, you won't waste the year because you will have done all or most of the subjects that you would've done anyway.

You're talking about the USyd engineering degrees, right?

This is what they say at the USyd engineering website:

Flexibility is built in to the Sydney University Engineering program by having a largely common first year and the ability to transfer between streams based on performance at university.

So there you go, you won't be wasting a year if you transfer at the end of 1st year.

It completely depends on what course you're doing, and where. The best thing to do is to either post in the relevant university forum (where people know about the specific degrees), or to contact the university directly.:)

not a total waste, 1st year engineering is pretty standard,

u may specialise in 1 subject though so it maybe hard to complete in 5 yeears if u do transfer.

Um I dunno too much about engineering specifically but I think at least half of the engineering subjects will be the same in aeronautical and civil. This will mean you can transfer your credit when you change your degree. Maybe it will take you half a year more so in that sense half a year is wasted.

Just to take another example, I just transferred into com/law in Usyd but was doing a similar degree in Macquarie Uni. I reckon probably the credit for 6 out of 8 subjects that I did will be transfered. This means I have 2 subjects to catch up on (quarter of a year). I can catch up on it in summer school or do an extra subject in some of the semesters (5 instead of 4). Then I finish in the same time as everybody else who went in directly and not transfered. Hope this helps.

^ lol, sorry about that

Thanks for all your replies guys, i kinda understand now but how about transfering externally?, for example from civil engineering in UWS to civil engineering UTS?, is it possible? if so, do they consider just your GPA or both your UAI and GPA

How is that rational? he could read the post that's already been made, or ask and have someone else post it for him to read

Or you could go the other way round and work for China/Russia/India and work for their space program authorities
Actually I think aeronautical includes planes as well as rockets. So maybe you can get a job in a Boeing or Airbus construction factory except they're probably only in America, Europe or China too. Still = unemployment in Australia.

1st year engineering is very 'common' among all streams. That is, you will be doing subjects with people from mechanical, civil, aero, electrical etc as the subjects are very general (maths, chemistry and physics etc) so you will be able to claim credit for those subjects when you transfer. You will also have to do civil subjects (1 or 2, depends on the uni) in first year, which you obviously can't claim credit for when doing aero.

Cut a long story short, if you do 1st year civil and apply to transfer and are accepted, you will probably shave a semester off your aero degree (ie you'll be one semester ahead of the 1st years, maybe more, again depends on the course and wont have to do those subjects)

Talk to the first year course adviser or similar at your uni and they'll be able to list it all out for you.

Inter-uni transfers are harder than Intra-uni as uni's are more willing to accept current students.

Finally, as first year eng is very common in subjects, then the uni's are expecting people to change their mind and move streams etc. so the process is pretty straightforward.

cheers
