Hi guys, I'm currently taking Mathematics Extension 1. I am good at Mathematics and could fairly easily achieve a decent score in Extension 1 (I achieved 64% with little-to-no study for the Preliminary Yearly) but I find it extremely frustrating work and I hate coming into School early to do it.

The only reason I am taking Extension 1 is because I wish to work in Engineering but I am afraid of getting a poor score in Extension 1 and screwing everything up.

Would you say Mathematics Extension 1 is essential for an Engineering Degree?

i'd REALLY REALLY REALLY recommend you do 4unit.

i can't stress this enough, do 4unit if yo uwant to continue doing engineering.

but 3unit will 'suffice'

If you look at some of the pre-requisites, they only want a band 5 in Maths, or a E1 or 2 in Ext 1 for an engineering degree... I am doing Ext 1, and am looking towards Engineering.

Remember to take into account what the Uni you wish to attend/the courses you want to do pre-requisites etc. Have a look at these. Suss out where you wish to go, and the options they have. For example the civil engineering course I wish to do at Newcastle is:

Assumed knowledge: HSC Mathematics (Band 5 or above) or Mathematics Extension 1 or equivalent
Recommended studies: Study one science-related subject would be an advantage
But overall, don't just "do" 4u, ask your teacher. I can't stress that enough. They will be able to inform you whether it will be worth it for you.

um m8 if you're doing engineering and you can't handle 4u then u can't handle engineering mathematics.

I may not be able to handle it, but it all is in steps. If the University requests that I only have a HSC Mathematics Band 5 or above, then I think that they will have courses to facilitate that. Yes, they may be developing on concepts you were taught at a 4U level in the first/second year, but for me, right now, I think I am in a good position for the course I want to do.

No good telling student that they must do 4U maths if they do not need it, however much it may help them. If they have trouble with 3U they are going to have more trouble with 4U. They are better off building a cement understanding of 3U so they then can develop the ideas of 4U during Uni. But really, the OP should be looking at the courses they might do :)

realistically if you can do 3u you can do 4u.

it's not that much of a step above 3u

of course you can do engineering with just 2unit or 3unit math

i'm just saying you'll struggle throughout first year math courses, that's all.

but obviously theres just as good a chance of handling it fine.

i'm just saying 4unit will help you out to the point where the math in engineering first year is a breeze

oh ic....

i no this would be a dumb question (as most topics would b covered) but overall for eng out of the 4U syllabus from wat topic wuld alot of the maths come frm.. plz dnt say complex numbers

for unsw -
complex
integration
mechanics
graphing
surface area (kinda like volumes)

PS. another thing is, doing 4u helps you get used to the workload that you'll be seeing in uni

I think you are being a little too critical tommy, math1131 wasnt that hard. having done 4u helped, but I certainly wouldnt say that having a 3u background would mean you would struggle.

no, MX1 is not essential for an engineering degree. however, if you want to do an engineering degree, be prepared for maths. I think one of my lecturers once said that 'maths is about maths, engineering is about applying math'
