Is anyone else finding that chem marks at their school is insanely low?
as in 33% as the average and shit like that.

I go to an alright school, and marks for every other subject are fairly high. But chem, holy shit.
Most kids don't even know what's going on, as in, no fucking idea what the fuck is going on..

Is chem just the hardest subject the world has to offer or is my school just borderline retarded?

Well, last year for the final Prelim exam, under 20 people passed out of a cohort of 85. The average was around 33% or something like that.

Speaking of chem, I just had my half yearly. It wasn't as hard as i thought it would be, but maybe could've done slightly better. At least no major blanks or anything...

What ranks/external HSC marks do you need to get a band 5 in Chemistry?

Yeah, what marks would you have to get in the externals to get bands 4,5&6?
If all schools are getting fucked over by chemistry..
it would be like 30% for a band 4 hahaha.

Could be. But again, you go to a selective school, so that maybe why.

I am interested to find out as well, but I doubt 30% raw aligns to a Band 4 for external HSC.

An raw mark of 80?
I know my marks were pretty damn high in most of my Chemistry assessments.
Oh ... but that's for assessment.
The external HSC exam was like my trial exam, just a little more difficult than other assessments so a 70's should get you into Band 5.

well judging from this thread there seems to be a massive variation in averages. I'm assuming that my grade is just crap at chem because if you don't understand the main concepts you're not going to do good in even an easy test.

If (non-selective) schools are gettin >80% averages then my school is farked on.

Tommykins, you do go to a selective school so that's prob why everyone does well :p

what is your teacher like? Coz my teacher explains all the main concepts really well and most people seem to get it. Marks for the last assessment varied from close to 100% down to about 60% (though it was fairly easy, heat of combustion for alkanols prac).

I'm not sure about <50%, but my school's selective, and our averages are usually around the 60% range.

Don't schools usually make their internal exams harder?

It really depends on the teacher. The average for chem in my school is about 60%. It is even lower (about 40%) in bioogy even though biology is easier, but when we do the HSC about 85% of students get band 6's. It just depends on how the teacher sets and marks exams. They often marks you much lower than the would if it were the HSC to make you feel like you are doing crap so you put in more work than you would've if you were getting 90% or so.
