The iPod is an innovation, not an invention.
It's simply a modified version of the invention of the MP3 Player.

It's a pretty awesome innovation though.

Invention is a new idea, innovation is applying or changing the way the idea works.

Invention:
magnetic/solid state hard drives, etc.

Innovation:
1) Take said hard drive
2) Put software to play music on it
3) ???
4) Profit

All that said, I've had an ipod mini (got a creative zen now), and have to say it is probably one of the best as far as portable media players go. It's the user interface that really does it for me...everyone knows how to use an ipod nowadays.
