I hope they move to block it, too.

Though I must say, the Liberal Party only believes in freedom of enterprise - despite the deceiving name (it is pretty far from 'liberal' in the political sense), freedom of enterprise is not necessarily freedom for the people or for the little guy.

In addition, while I'm a proud agnostic, please do not put the blame on religion. It is one's character that is to blame for any problems in society, not their religion. Why should one's religious beliefs have any effect on one's actions or personality?

While many of the menaces of society have been religious, there are plenty of religious people who are perfectly fine and are unfairly discriminated against. Just try to keep it in mind, please?
No.

Religious conservatives are squarely to blame for measures like this.

I think the government has as much right to censor the internet as any other medium.

If anything, by not censoring the internet, and allowing free reign of what used to be, and the community expects to be, restricted material, they undermine all other forms of censorship.

It's a farcical situation where the government is banning the sale and possession of material in print form, when this material is available instantaneously to anyone with an internet connection.

Just the other day, I was delighted to find this highly controversial, banned literature available for free on Google books http://books.google.com.au/books?hl...a=X&oi=book_result&resnum=3&ct=result#PPP1,M1

I think if print media were invented today, in a post-electronic world, people would laugh at the idea of censoring it, without equal censorship being applied to the electronic media first.

If the government has the technological ability to censor the internet, it would seem only fair and consistent in line with their other, existing censorship policies, that they do so.
That's just stupid.

You should be campaigning for relaxing censorship of non-digital media, not encouraging censorship of digital media simply for consistency's sake.

I disagree. I believe it is simply lack of understanding and education of net neutrality. Anyone who is against net neutrality is either against freedom or is lacking in education. While it is probably true that a lower percentage of religious people may be as technologically adept which may cause less understanding of net neutrality within the religion, religion can't easily be linked to it.

Most religious people I know are all for freedom. Most of them are all for the principals behind net neutrality as well.

I therefore shift the blame over to conservatives. You don't have to be a conservative to be religious, so stop pointing the finger at religion.

Just to clarify things, I certainly think religion is both a waste of time and a waste of energy and really shouldn't exist anymore - but since this whole topic is about freedom on the internet, I would like to mention that more importantly people should have freedom to religious beliefs. How exactly can belief in a god, sins, after life, and other aspects of religion be linked to opposing net neutrality?

You seem to have a fundamental comprehension problem.

'Religious conservatives' is a subset of conservatives, as it is a subset of religious people.

There is nothing wrong with blaming religious conservatives for problems they cause. Get off your high horse and stop taking offence at it. It is not a sweeping generalisation of all religious people; it targets a very specific set: the conservative ones.

It's very easy to see why such people oppose it: they find things like pornography abhorrent and 'morally unacceptable' as a direct result of their twisted interpretations of their holy books.

Did you notice I didn't blame this on socially liberal religious people? It's because, shock-horror, they have nothing to do with it.

What I was getting at was that as far as I know, the Greens have no intention of voting against this policy.

Dudes, I was scruting at the Ryde local council elections, and I saw the massive Greens protest vote against Labor. I'm not that blind :p
I don't know if they will either, but according to http://greens.org.au/node/784 they should. In particular, point 8.

HisNameIsChris - I don't know where you're coming from, but yes, I'm speaking about the religious conservatives, and yes, they are bigots.

These are the people who attend Anti-Choice rallies, openly disdain of homosexuals, most of them don't believe in anthropogenic climate change (let alone evolution), and generally base their policy decisions on what their religion (equally Anglican and Catholic) tells them.

Yeah, I think that the internet has been generally terrible for social cohesion. It's a time funnel where people can entertain their darkest desires in almost total privacy. It divorces people from their community, from the greater good, and makes them hopelessly selfish. It is abominably corruptive. Frankly i'm just surprised that it has taken the government this long to get serious about reigning in this unlimited evil. I think that if all goes well, our generation will be viewed as a soiled one - one corrupted by too much temptation and not enough self discipline. I think this is the case where you have people starting threads about things like "do we EVEN need an ARMY?", and taking ever opportunity to make a joke about some horrific trajedy - especially rape and paediophilia

This is an abomination. I am so furious I can barely contain my rage at this moment.

Thanks government! I was having such a hard time looking after myself until you came along!

EDIT: Why is that guy talking about Net Neutrality, this is filtering, they're slightly related issues but Net Neutrality has nothing to do with overt government censorship, but prioritisation of services.

Oh hay guys I'm the government doing a MITM attack on your https sessions so we can see all your private shit in cleartext because of the children!

If this was really part of a culture that was pro-children we'd outlaw letting bogans breed and we'd strictly enforce random abortions of about 50% of pregnancies (it's like Jury Duty but medicare would cover it)

Hmm...I'm not sure if I was being sarcastic or not actually. I was seriously hoping that that small l liberal Nick Minchin types in the liberal party would stage a coup against the conservative faction. But I was also implying that this probably wouldn't happen :(

Nick Michin is like the head of the moral conservative faction.

He hates pornography and shit. Check the libertus.net website (you can find a link in the blog posted in my OP).

o rly? I thought I read somewhere he was head small "l" liberal...

Well, I suppose Turnball is much less socially conservative than Howard, so maybe he will exert his newfound influence in the party. Although, again, I doubt it... :(

I dunno, I swear I read something like that last night but I can't find it now so maybe you're right.
