every time i try to install something from a disc XP brings up a dialogue with a critical error reading:

"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXECNT The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS AND MICROSOFT WINDOWS APPLICATIONS. Choose close to terminate the application"

What's the go? Can anyone help me? Re-installing XP would fuck me around so thats outta the question.

best idea would be to back anything up important and do a fresh install.

anything semi-important can normally be recovered
