I just wanted to know if in the HSC do they only ask questions relating to the syllabus dot points. Because i noticed in the jacaranda text book they give more information than the dot points.

For example in the space topic the jacaranda text book gives a definition for mass while there is nothing about defining mass in the syllabus

Basically what is am asking i will i be fine just covering the dot points

I think so. I heard that they write the exam using the dotpoints.

Yes, when they write the exam, the examiners basically turn dot points into questions.

yeah, only relating to the syllabus dotpoints
textbooks normally go way off topic, all they do is dump info on you, better to make/aquire notes relating to dotpoints :)

They tend to ask trick questions though, if u look at the 2008 paper Q 21
'the work of scientists is influenced by external factors'

''large- scale electricity distribution systems''

If you had chosen to write about ^ that topic, you would think that you'd write about thomas edison and george westinghouse, because the dot point equally focuses on both men and their competition in providing electricity. However, westinghouse isnt a scientist his a businessman (would many ppl have known? idk, would u think that you have to know? idk) so if you focused on both men 50/50 in your response you wouldve been penalised

The exam is written from the Outcomes first, with all covered in some way or another. They may choose a specific dotpoint to cover an outcome or they may choose another area to cover the outcome.

Not specifically.... The assumption is Yr 11 prelim is assumed knowledge for Yr 12. It cannot be assessed in HSC as the syllabus has 2 separate outcomes for each course.

To the OP, the answer is generally yes but look out for questions that integrate skills into these outcomes or worst yet that integrate 3 dot points into one.

For e.g. E=nHf can integrate work, energy and frequency from other dot points.

Remember to mind map and link as much concepts with formulas and theory.

Best of Luck.
