Amber thinks that Lynn is a lucky ducky :p

Last night Amber discovered the game RIVEN, after having completed Myst in her youth, and is now completely enthralled. Amber knows she should be studying, however she is enjoying herself immensely and thinks out loud, "Screw the HSC, because it is just reallyreallyridiculously annoying." :D She wonders if this echoes the thoughts of her friends Lynn and Justin..?

Amber's thoughts definitely echo Justin's.

Justin could never get through Riven, though he attempted it a number of times. He has decided that giving up is a much better idea than bashing his own head in out of frustration.

He found Myst rather easy, though.

Lynn's hsc is OVER!!! Yay.

Lynn loves post-HSC, because her life is not the school/dance/sleep/school/dance/sleep pattern it used to be. Lynn has yet to go back to dance, has no reason to go to school, and thus has plenty of time for sleep and fun things.

Lynn admits she has never played either Myst or Riven. Lynn also has to go in 10 minutes to start on her hair and makeup for going out (to watch fashion parade! yay!). She wonders if, after she leaves, either Justin or Amber would be able to take care of hopelessly lost EE2 student in main EE2 forum who DOES NOT KNOW WHAT POSTCOLONIALISM IS. *Lynn breathes deeply, as she learnt postcolonialism in Week 1 Term 1 of Yr 11*

Justin doesn't know what postcolonialism, so he won't be helping. :p

Justin hopes Lynn enjoys her afternoon.

Amber asks, has Lynn already done the art exam? Amber is confused (which is an easy thing to do to poor Amber. Many people believe she should have been born a blonde ;))

Amber agrees with Justin that Myst was easy peasyness, and thinks that Riven isn't really all that harder? Well, she's going well in it anyway. She has been playing it instead of studying. She's a naughty girl :p Her 16-yr-old-computer-whiz-of-a-brother is rather jealous as Amber played for 5 straight hours last night, and got further than he had in two days. Amber considered this a great compliment to her logistic skills, as her brother is a comp buff and is currently creating his own decoding program which he plans to install on his school's comp network. He's made it to mimic the M DOS prompt!

He's a smart cookie LOL

EDIT: Amber also does not have any idea what post colonialism is and waits for Lynn's inevitable shock :D

Lynn certainly will.

*gasp* Lynn gasps in horror that Justin does not know what postcolonialism is. Lynn thought it was the first thing everyone learnt.

Then Lynn remembers that her english teacher is OBSESSED with postcolonialism and globalisation which are pretty much the same thing.

Justin wonders where Amber is up to in Riven, and marvels at her brother's intelligence.

Justin was never taught about what postcolonialism is, however he thinks the term appears to be self-explanatory. Justin doesn't mind, as he seems to have gotten by well enough without that knowledge.

Justin states that he knows what globalisation is, however he was taught that it was related to the development of a global culture, as corporations extend their business over national borders, creating more homogenous societies.

Lynn does not do art... :S

Lynn GASPS that Amber does not know what post-colonialism is, but agrees with Justin that it is very self-explanatory and simply looks at colonisation from the colonised perspective, particularly previously-glossed-over-negative-points.

Amber tells Justin that she is not exactly sure if she can say 'where she is up to' as Riven is not really a sequencial game.... a lot of things can be done in whatever order to achieve a similar result. But she can say that she has visited all the islands, worked out how to use almost all the interesting devices (eg the submarine, the gas generator,), discovered many secret passage ways, solved many puzzles and used them to complete objectives, and is currently trying to figure out how to use the telescope upon the first island. She thinks she has almost cracked it :D

Amber suggests that Justin use a walkthrough if he is genuinely stuck. They're plastered all over the net for naughty cheaters, yet Amber admits that she will sometimes use one if she is genuinely stumped (although she has not used one for Riven yet, and did not use one for Myst)

It can, although globalisation can also infiltrate local culture (now we're REALLY starting), meaning a loss of local culture, values, tradition and heritage eg kids going off to boarding school etc.

Lynn has to run off and start doing her hair and makeup now, she will flit back to the computer every now and again. :D

Oh, Amber had thought that Lynn's beautiful dresses were for an art major work, but now admits her mistake and apologises. She thinks that Lynn is supremely lucky, however tomorrow night Amber may come on the net to celebrate her new found freedom with Lynn :D

Justin refuses to use a walkthrough, as it is cheating and he doesn't cheat.

He will work that game out one day. He managed to work out most of the devices but couldn't work out how to operate the huge dome on the first island.
