The 2006 IMO was held at in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on July 12 and July 13, 2006.

silver: 19

So Australia has 3 silver and 2 bronze.

China has come first with a total of 214 and 6 gold.

The first person to get a 7 for question 6 was Przemysław Mazur from Poland, which was so hard not many got a 7 and the cut-off for gold is quite low. I wonder is he any relation to the great mathematician Barry Mazur? B. Mazur had published a lot of stuff on modular forms and elliptic curves, some of which Wiles used in his proof of Fermat's Last Theorem.

P.S. How is Barry Mazur "great"?? He's just one of those millions of University academics that we call "mathematicians" out there in the world. Not to mention, his time is probably close to being up soon (as in, his academic spotlight time).

Yes, we all know the story behind that proof don't we lol.

But you know, that just makes Mazur slightly famous, not great.

Ppl are famous in this world for all sorts of reasons, for right ones or the wrong ones. But usually the Greats are great for the right reasons.
Thus, not all famous ppl are necessarily great.

Perhaps Australia could raise its rank by providing students a more sound foundation at school, especially in the higher years of primary school and junior years of high school. The training could then be started from a higher level and at a quicker pace.

In addition there is the divide between being good enough to make the team, and being good enough to get a medal at the IMO, which seems to the be main problem with the Australian team. We have reasonable talent at the top end, but this drops off very quickly.

Overall, a pleasing result for Australian, on par with recent years. Judging from the overall marks and cutoffs, this year's IMO seems to be harder than the previous two, although the questions don't appear overly difficult at first sight.

Well, that is usually expected. It's the three perfect scores, followed by only mid 30s that threw me off. I suppose I can dig up all the stats from previous IMOs and find a similar situation somewhere before, but it still seems odd.
