I recieved my half yearly results today and I got 40% in extension test
and 61% in my advanced. Alot of kids had trouble (one guy got 6%).
My teacher told me afterwards, when I was contemplating suicide, that I need to work on study techniques and preperation for tests because I run out of time or make stupid mistakes. He told me its not an issue of whether or not I understand the work.

So I need some advice, what can I do to improve my marks?

Well, maybe I'm just good at maths (which I'm not), but i tend to go in feeling confident because I've prepared pretty well, and then the confidence level slowly drops as I go through the exam... Probably what you need to do is wrk on all the questions first, then go back to the ones you don't know, and then check your exam over and over to correct the careless mistakes, cause there WILL BE SOME!!! Then you should at least be getting 70+ marks. No problem there.

Are you usually that bad at math, or was it just the exam situation? Why don't you try some sugar pills if you feel you're loosing concentration in an exam, thats what my teacher suggested. I don't know where to get sugar pills though... :( I like sweets.

Although, my teacher also said that if you mess with your blood sugar levels by drinking coke or redbull, then you're going to do worse in the test, so don't drink those high caffiene drinks before the test.

Also, think of the solution to a question before you start doing it. If it's just 2U, you should be able to think of the way you're going to get the answer before you even start writing. Think like:
what am I trying to find,
how am I going to find it,
what will help me find it,
what formular will be involved in this question...

Always check your formulars, lots of people acciddently miswrite their formualrs and loose marks.

EDIT: I replaced use with loose. why did i have use where i ment to put loose? i must have been careless. :D

I have never exactly been amazing at maths but not bad, I was hoping for a high band 5/ low band 6 in my HSC. I know if I work hard enough I can acheive that.
The entire exam situation gets to me and I panic and mess up my answers. For example, pages of working out provided these answers:
56>0 (false)
3>0 (false)
12>0 (false)
therefore x=no solution.
Its sad to know I mess up things like that.

Oh shit... I like drinking a can of V before I go into an exam - especially English, you can write so much shit because you don't feel fatigued. :read:

Other than that, I think that practice exams are the best way to go about improving your exam techniques and stuff. If you know the stuff, then all you really need to focus on is time management within the test.

Know formulas, do a type of every question that could be in the exam (ask your teacher for help with this), then past papers, past papers, past papers.

Hi, Sarah.

When it comes to exam results, what you need to focus on is rank rather than marks. Marks are important but rank is more important. It is perfectly okay to perform poorly in one exam. As they say, failure is the key to success.

When I was in my Preliminary year for Mathematics and Mathematics Extension 1 year, I was quite struggling as I had to study all Year 10 and Preliminary Mathematics and Preliminary Mathematics Extension 1 at the same time (basically by myself). I put in one to two hours a day every night (or morning in my situation) and I consistently solved questions from different variety of resources. The biggest secret to my success of my consistent study was never a great result. However, consistent study of 1 year eventually led me to solve questions at a faster pace (because of increased understanding of different questions combined with naturally quick calculation speed).

I am neither naturally talented in Mathematics nor intelligent adept at understanding formuals. It is just that I am extremely fast at calculation. I used that advantage. By doing a great variety of questions, I increased the understanding and I made sure that I know all the formulas inside out (even how they were derived). Nowadays, I can finish HSC Mathematics papers in just under 2 hours and 10 minutes. I still have 50 minutes left where I can just use to go through questions over again and again. I do make numerous mistakes. However, I am seeing less mistakes every time I do my exam.

So, be consistent. Put in a little bit of time. Investment into knowledge pays the highest interest.

Thanks for the feedback guys, its really helpful.
Especially lyounamu, its obvious in your posts you have alot of determination and passion to succeed.
I am going to try to apply myself better at home (studying ect.), I have slacked off recently and these results are what I needed to get myself back on track.
