Does everyone else have critics for Mod B? The teachers at my school either tell us to absolutely not do it because it makes us look incapable of original thought or they insist that it's imperative that we do it because otherwise it looks like we're under-prepared. Does anyone have a reliable source as to whether we need them or not?

My school teacher never mentions anything about it and my tutor tells me it depends on the school. Overall though, he said you don't need it to get a 20.
Personally, I'm not including it because it's hard to find any for some of the speeches I do

What texts are you doing? I'm doing Poetry by Kenneth Slessor, and my teacher states, 'your critics are simply the related texts for this module. Only have a few that speak about the text and one that refers to the Poet.'

So yes, I would use a couple of critics, it will surely boost your marks.

Thank goodness! I make some of the weirdest and most obscure arguments on Earth in English (I have noooo idea where they come from, but my teacher assures me she has never read a single one of my essays where something hasn't made her go 'well, that's a bit weird'). As a result I can't link any critics with my arguments, because no one's really made them before. And yeah speeches would be really hard to find good literary critics for. Like not many scholars would analyse speeches like they would Shakespeare. The most prominent 'literary critic' to evaluate Paul Keating's speeches is probably some guy working for smh in the 90s haha

Ah shit, look at these conflicting perspectives. I'm doing Yeats, so there definitely are scholars, but my whole 'weird af way of seeing the world' thing makes me struggle to find critics that I can incorporate into the arguments I have?

Have you learnt about some critics and their judgements in class? If you have, use those.

No, my teacher sucks and didn't even tell us to consider using critics. It wasn't until a girl in my class brought up the idea that all the teachers started fighting over whether or not we should use them. But I've always really liked Yeats and have a few books about him and his work from before we started studying him, so I can probably find something there if you think it's worth including.

You're allowed to say something like,

''While [critic] expresses the opinion that Hamlet is [...], my view is that Hamlet is [...] because [...]''.

OR

''According to [critic], Hamlet is [...]. However, my perspective is that [...].''

Your view does not need to align with the critic's view.

I used critics (like 1 or 2) and even, made a reference to a Hamlet production but seriously, you don't need critics to get 20/20.

A 20/20 essay, without critics, will still be a 20/20.

So you can give your personal critique, but I believe that to achieve a high mark, you should at least make reference to a couple of critics.

So true for me too, so much so I stopped going and slept in/went home early any time we had morning or afternoon classes. I had to have a meeting with the deputy principal because if I missed an extra 2 classes of Advanced English I wouldn't have made up the mandatory hours and they school would have had to have failed the student ranked first hahahaha
