First of all, I know it's an old computer, It's a reliable little notebook that I can take places that I wouldn't take my new one.

Problem is, the screen died on my old one, so I sourced a new laptop that was complete other than an HDD and a CD drive. I have 3 HDD's so thats not the problem... The problem is that I need to re-install Windows and the laptop won't recognise the DVD drive in BIOS or any settings I can think of.

I have had the same problem in the one that has the busted screen (HP Omnibook 6000), simply fixed by putting the original CD drive in and installing off that. I no longer know where that CD drive has got to (Oops), and do not have the original for the 6100.

Any suggestions on how to get this bloody machine to recognise the new DVD drive?

EDIT: Ps. The DVD drive works after Windows boot-up on the other machine. Just doesn't show up in boot sequence.

How exactly did u "source" this new laptop? No hdd or cd drive seems a bit shifty.

It came from my Dad's Girlfriend. Lol. She works in I.T. and her company was giving them out as they are outdated. She took those components because it will help her in reviving an old laptop she already has.

Any suggestions?

my 2 cents are that the BIOS might not recognise the new hardware unless its been upgraded/reflashed. I'm not sure how it works on laptops so search around a bit in the HP support website. They'll have instructions on doing it.

What the computer does:

Usual HP Splash screen with:
(ESC) For boot order.
(F2) For setup
Etc...

I enter the boot order menu and it displays a list of devices such as:

CD/DVD-ROM Drive
HDD
Removable Devices
Etc...

I choose CD/DVD-ROM drive, yet the computer still tries to boot off the HDD showing the "Windows was not shut down properly... Start windows in safe mode? Start windows normally?..." screen.

Choose any of these options and I get an extreamly quick glimpse of the XP loading splash screen and a bluescreen.

I have tried changing the boot sequence, but that has no effect either. Always off the HDD. I know this would be easily fixed with the other CD drive, but shouldn't the BIOS recognise the newer DVD drive anyway?

All pins on the HDD are fine, so are the DVD drives pins. All is required to get the computer to work is a re-installation of XP, but this problem stands in my way.

does the blue screen have text, if it does it sounds like the blue screen of death

It displays this on two of my three HDD's:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen..."

I'm sure you know how the rest goes.

Other HDD just displays "No operating system detected" which is correct as there is none on the drive.

I am sure it's not the blue screen of death. The same thing can't happen on two drives. I have had the same thing on the older OmniBook 6000 and fixed by a re-installation of XP.

This is where my original problem arises.

it is a BSoD. Means a reinstall of windows could be required.

Lol. Can't reinstall though. CD drive problem...

I haven't tried the BIOS upgrade yet. I shall post when I have.

can't help you any further than that man, you should pass it on to the manufacturer or something if nothing works.

I've sent a support request to HP. Let's hope they respond. Makes no sence why the drive is listed, non responsive in boot-up, but works in Windows.

I mean... WTF!?
