wtf was with the galvanic cell question, and they completely smashed calculations, and the test with the titration graph, and the what would koh form with a similar acid to acid 1, wtf was that

fukin vague questions, why cnt those pricks jsut tell us what they want, what is "a similar acid to acid 1"

and the galvanic cell question

inert electrodes with mixture of fe2+ and fe3+ and a pb electrode with pb2+

how the hell do u do that
with the galvanic cell shouldnt the cathode just be Fe2+ in aqueous...
overall the exam wasnt as hard as i was expecting
multiple choice was pretty easy

I liked the test, though I found the shipwrecks bit harder. Does anyone know if they scale the options individually so they roughly equal the others? Because if one option was harder then the others its not real fair. I also really like how they didnt ask about the stupid acid scientists. Lots of essays though, does this make the exam harder?

Does anyone remember the question asking to recover heat loss to surrounding? What was your answer?

1. I said use a copper can as it is a better conductor of heat
2. Perform experiment in room at constant temperature with no breeze or wind.

1. (same as above)
2. Keep the can as close as possible to the flame (without it being dangerous lol)

I put :
1. Using a heat shield surrounding the beaker
2. Raising the flame closer to the beaker
Hopefully its alright

what was the answer to the heat of combustion question?

was it like 0.9 g of ethanol (i found the heat and divided it by 2, i didnt divide the heat of combustion (given) by 2).

Pretty straight forward I thought. Multiple choice was a breeze. Most questions were pretty good except for the bread question and the titrations.....that thing about K was random. Otherwise I was pretty happy although the coruse wasn't covered well in my opinion.

Ok, I'm just starting yr 12 now...

Am I going to flip my shit in the the exam next year because I have dropped maths?!

I'm good at chemistry, but if the maths was really hard, I'm getting worried.
Should I be worried?!?!
I AM WORRIED!!

Q14 in the multiple choice was b) 41.6 g/L

symbol equation: C6H8O7 + 3NaOH → C6H5Na3O7 + 3H2O

word equation: cirtic acid + sodium hydroxide → sodium citrate + water

n=cv

therefore, number of moles of NaOH = 0.550 x 0.0295(29.5mL)
= 0.016225 moles
number of moles of Na0H/number of moles of citric acid = 3/1

therefore; number of moles of citric acid = number of moles of NaOH/3

hence, the number of moles of citric acid = 0.016225/3
= 0.00540833... moles
mass of citric acid = molar mass x number of moles
= 192.12 x 0.00540833
= 1.039049 grams

therefore; concentration of citric acid = grams/litres
= 1.039049/0.025
= 41.56196...
= 41.6 g/L
= b) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H2O_(American_band)

you'll be fine, chemistry is not really that maths intense.

Yeah, but what if the water was acidic. Is adding lime really "adjusting the pH"?

Gah stupid textbooks and excel... mine said pH just before flouridation but after settling/sedimentation. I sure BoS agrees with me.

EDIT: Excel said for Australia, CSIRO developed a method whereby pH is adjusted (just before chlorination) in order to allow Magnetite to absorb most of the organic matter in the sewage which is then made to clump etc etc. I am going to believe therefore, the answer is still D.
CLUMP ETC ETC= flocculation, so this occurs before chlorination according to CSIRO. btw why are you talking about sewage? I'm pretty sure sewage is not reused for domestic use in australia. I'm starting to think they will mark it as both B and D, but the roland smith conquering chem text book is pretty reliable, especially since BoS has used it as a source for graphs etc. in their past HSC chemistry tests.

hey everyone you don't need to winge directly to BoS, remember what Lazarus says (that article he posted)? they moniter bored so they'll know.

I found it pretty cruel that they had THREE calculation questions in a row for the multiple choice. Yeah I stuffed the calculation stuff....

But the 6/7 markers were AWESOME. Polyethylene and Equilibrium?? Thank you very much haha
