Well, you have to choose a major so you can pick subjects (or be allocated compulsory subjects) based on what your major is. You can also start choosing subjects that will make up units for your minor.

I majored in Medical Microbiology and Immunology - so compulsory subjects for both sessions in first year were Chemistry, Biology and Maths, my 2 electives (1 per session) were Introduction to Computing and Philosophy (I had no idea what I wanted my minor to be at the time )

thanx christ_ine im doijng it at uws. and i have to choose between general science, biotechnology, or biological science, which is the best and will i b dramatically disadvantaged coz i dont have the assumed knowledge, this being, physics biology, chemistry,etc...

no, im happy, i hated the hsc syllabus.....my teachers made me study the syllabus instead of the content

meh..no syllabi = no worries just study everything that is in the lectures / tues and you are set

In University who have to make your own study since the lectures are too general.

For one of my subjects I had to read at 15 textbooks all about at least 500 pp.

You read 500 pages and for one subject? I don't think I even approached (anyway, near) 500 for all my subjects from first year. But then I was lazy...
