Vinyl chloride is made from decomposition of ethylene dichloride but I don't think we need to know it.

You're right.... the syllabus only says:

• identify the following as commercially significant monomers:
- vinyl chloride - styrene
by both their systematic and common names


• describe the uses of the polymers made from the above monomers in terms of their properties

The ethylene is heated to 150 degrees celsius, with chlorine and oxygen, and in the presence of a copper chloride catalyst.

yeh i was thinking it wasnt in the syllabus but would the reaction be: 2C2H4 + Cl2 --> 2C2H3Cl + H2???

nah like I said there is oxygen present and water is the by product. 4C2H4+2Cl2+O2 ----> 4C2H3Cl + 2H2O
