Most new USB'z will be 2.0. What's the brand name, and series?

i have a hp pavilion series 2000 or something... i'll check for the exact model and tell you later

fatmuscle thanks for that article very useful however in my case i want to know which ports are usb 1.1 and which ones are 2.0

EDIT

as for my computer model, i dont have it here at the moment but i think it is a hp pavilion DV2308TX (notebook) - there are 2 ports on the right side, and one port on the left side. the user guide does not give the usb version info. i suspect not all ports are 2.0 and would like to know which exact ones are or arnt Hi Speed.

The most easiest way is to plug in a usb device (pen drive) that is 2.0 part on your computer. When the device is plugged in xp will say that you are running a slower usb speed if the device you plugged in is 2.0. This means your pc has older usb ports (non high speed)
You might want to check your bios, it should say it there if your usb ports are 2.0 or not.

ok.. i'll check that sometime...

as for windows notices about the usb ports, heres the weird thing:

im running on vista home premium, and it is set to tell me if i plugged a 2.0 drive into a 1.1 port. however i have only recieved that message once since i first got the computer - i have always used the same drive on a particular port.

Did that computer come with vista preloaded or did you upgrade your OS from a previous one? If that computer came with Vista its preaty safe to say that its new enough that it will have USB 2.0

yes it came pre-loaded and i'm sure it does have 2.0 ports (and also 1.1) but have not idea which ones are 2.0 and which ones are 1.1

If it's the DV2xxx series, it comes with three 2.0 ports
