So you've got your prepared essay, and the question is completely different and it is hard to keep referring back to the question without sounding like you dont know what your tlkin about. How often would you recommend to refer back for say a band 5 answer?

You need to refer back to the question at the begining and end of every paragraph (aka topic/linking sentences). Thats obviously in addition to the references you make in the intro and conclusion.

if you're 'referring' to it in the typical places, what are you doing in the guts of the essay? Are you not referring to it there at all?

To add to this:
Your first line should be your argument/thesis for that paragraph
Your last line should be how it (and the evidene you've provided in the paragraph) relates to your question.

i am a band 6 student and i generally would recommend refering back to the question in the title
