Hey guys

I am to start Engineering at UNSW in July and have concluded my enrolment process and made a timetable but I want to ask for your opinions on it.

So basically I have classes from/to-

Monday: 09:00 - 14:00 (5 Hours)
Tuesday: 12:00 - 13:00, 14:00 - 18:00
Wednesday: 10:00 - 12:00, 13:00 - 15:00, 16:00 - 18:00
Thursday: 09:00 - 12:00, 13:00 - 14:00
Friday: 09:00 - 12:00, 13:00 - 18:00

This was the only viable option that I could come up with but what are your thoughts on it, so that I could change it when I can.
Would the 5 hr/ 4hr continous classes be too much?

Thanks!

Tuesday: 1st Hour and 3rd Hour
Wednesday: 1st 2 Hours and Last 2 Hours
Thursday: 3rd Hour
Friday: 1st 2 Hours and 4th Hour

4-5hrs straight isn't too bad. I've got actual four hour classes in my degree. Straights of 8 hours and up I've done before, and coped. I'm sure you can manage it.

Wow 5 days a week! So many contact hours! I have 12 contact hours, 3 days a week and I'm doing a double degree!

Don't listen to this guy, he does B Unemployment.

Engineering students go 5 days a week.
I do engineering and science at USyd and my table has 6 hours straight and 4-5 hour classes sometimes. Your timetable is fine.

You know it'd be better to post the picture of the timetable.

Because lectures and labs and tutes are different in... mental stress levels.

3 9am starts= bad
I echo this, from experience. 9am Monday is not a great idea.

Also, I noticed you have 26 hours; which stream are you taking?

I'm taking mechanical and also I have limited choice in my enrolment due to clashes and unavailability so that is the best that I could come up with (and I'd much rather take 9AM starts over the 9PM finish). The courses I have selected are MATH1131, PHYS1121, COMP1911 and MATS1101. My other alternative for the elective instead of MATS1101 was MMAN1130 but there was no way that was viable for me.

Have I done something wrong/ not recommended? I thought 26 hours/week was normal for my course.

Thanks

Also I think some classes are only held every other week so I guess that will take some hours off (I am not 100% sure though but in the enrollment process it said weeks 3,5,7,9...).
I just had a look and it seems the elective I chose had a 1 hour less contact hours than MMAN1130. But this means I will have to take MMAN1300 and MMAN1130 in the same semester, is this okay?

I apologize for the double post.

No, it's fine. The hours are pretty standard. I think the older you get, the more you hate early starts. If you'd prefer early starts to late finishes, then it's alright the way it is.

I see. I asked because I am currently doing Mech, and for Sem 1, I had 25 hours. I did higher for all (same hours though), and ENGG1000 instead of MATS.

And, just because the handbook says MATS1101 and MMAN1130 are "recommend", it doesn't mean they are mandatory/compulsory. I decided against doing MMAN1130 because of the ridiculous timetabling (5 hours at Ultimo Tafe, either taking a whole day, or finishing at 11pm if you attempt to cram it in).

Also I think some classes are only held every other week so I guess that will take some hours off (I am not 100% sure though but in the enrollment process it said weeks 3,5,7,9...).

Sure this is fine, but only if you want to do MMAN1130. Ask around and see what those who have done MMAN1130 think of the course.

Thank you for your input, I think getting into a habit of waking early is a good thing personally considering I work night shifts part time atm.

I will definitely reconsider MMAN1130 because I ultimately have to take MMAN1300 and I assume they are similar in some way. The reason I chose MATS1101 over ENGG1000 (In my 1st term) was because apparently I can only choose one assignment topic If I take ENGG1000 in semester 2 (something along those lines) but many people would undertake ENGG1000 in their first term so would I be at any disadvantage if I take it in my second term (semester 1)? Maybe they aid other courses in learning or something?

Sorry if I sound paranoid but I just don't want to mess it up especially since I am starting later than others.

I don't think 1130 and 1300 are that similar. One course is Design in Manufacture, and the other is Engineering Mechanics, so one would focus on design, and the other on the physics of engineering. (but read/ask around to see the difference).

You won't be disadvantaged if you do ENGG1000 your first Semester; however, from what I've heard, the range of project options are quite limited. But if you've decided on MATS then that's perfectly fine as well. Just make sure the courses you want to do next Semester (your second semester) are available.
