If I get a tutor that got 94 in ext2, do you reckon he would be able to explain everything perfectly (let's assume that he/she is brilliant at English as well). So what is the limit of mathematical prowess that a person that got 94 in ext2 possesses?

i got 98 in ext 2... tbh i think they could do most questions, they might have just made some silly errors under time pressure etc. etc.

given time they could probably solve most questions..!

Why need tutor be good in English? What's the rate?

Do you want a really good tutor? If so, in your mind, what constitutes a good tutor? What are the attributes you look for?

I'd say they have to be reasonably good at English, so it demonstrates to me, and any others that they are able to express and communicate ideas clearly and eloquently. I don't see any point in finding a tutor that, whilst brilliant at Maths, received a Band 4 in English which would mean he/she'd most likely be unable to clearly TEACH, and EXPLAIN what exactly is going on, what the mathematical concept is, and how to solve these questions etc. So yes, English is fairly important.

I wouldn't say its importance passes that of having a certain extent of prowess in Mathematics; i.e. obviously... a tutor must be very good at maths, perhaps not a mind-decimating genius, but confident enough to encounter most questions that appear in Ext1/2 maths.

And patience, yes I believe that is a definite requirement :S

you have to be brilliant..

plus nice dp haha

Marks shouldn't be the only thing to discriminate how good/bad a tutor is.

What you want is someone who can communicate. A person good in English may not necessarily be a good communicator.

Hmmm... I find that statement to be a paradox. Success in English is determined by the individual possessing the ability to be able to express themselves in a clear, logical and sustained manner, that is, to be a good communicator. Speeches, essays; these things are an integral part of HSC English, and in order to do well in these aspects of English, you must be able to clearly communicate your ideas to the examiner. As much as I loathe HSC English, I am sure that myself, and perhaps a few other people can see that HSC English builds a strong foundation for these skills, which are essential to succeeding in the real world. Likewise, a good tutor must be able to clearly communicate themselves to the student.

It doesn't matter to me whether they did Standard English, or Advanced English, because the final marks align to the same level. All I ask for is someone that efficiently explain something to me, in times when I am struggling. So I believe that if anyone got a HSC English mark of 85+, they indeed have some level of skill in this area.

So yes.... A person good in English most definitely will be a good communicator.

No paradox at all. Imagine a student who has topped the state in Eng Ext 2. But is unbearably shy: can't look you in the eye. Speaks annoyingly slowly. Or speaks with a stutter.

Conversely I have never done any NSW HSC English. Are you going to conclude I'm unable to communicate well?

By the same token say someone has great mathematical prowess. But cannot understand why mere mortals are so dumb. Hasn't got empathy to understand where the student (assume quite bright)'s difficulties lie. Has no patience. Couldn't be bothered to come down to the student's level. Would this maths genius make a good tutor for mere mortals?

Hmm... speaking is still a part of English, and regardless of whether you have a speaking disorder, you still will get marked down for not possessing adequate speaking skills. Moreover, Ext2 English doesn't really provide a clear picture of the individual's ability as an effective communicator, as all you are doing is composing a piece. Anywho the general trend is that [good in Standard/Advanced English] = [good communicator]. However it only gives an indication of that person's skill in communicating.

As you said, there can be circumstances where a person that is great at English, still could be a poor communicator. So while it is not 100% certain that this person will be a great tutor, I as a student, am comforted knowing that my tutor would most likely be a good communicator. Too many times have I gone to tutoring companies e.g. James Ann, where the teacher is incredibly smart in Mathematics, yet his foreign background caused him to have a fairly heavy Asian accent.

No I won't judge anyone if they haven't done HSC English, right now I'm desparate for an affordable tutor, however an 85+ English mark is still fairly comforting to me. Also, I don't often just find a tutor and then go straight to him/her, I often have a conversation with them, to determine their personality and their sanity. So finally, a good mark at English doesn't guarantee that the tutor would be an efficient communicator, however from my perspective, I would probably choose him/her over others. In the end, I suppose it's I that decides whether I keep this tutor or go for someone better.
