How do I cite references? (1 Viewer)

Hi
I have read what my uni provide and I still don't understand.

Say im talking about a specific method of growing a plant industrially, I write a paragraph on that. Do I cite the whole paragraph? Because the way I write it is read the original source then write it in my own words ( Since theres only one method of growing this plant its hard to change the words alot).

Yes, if it's not your idea then you have to reference whoevers idea it is as if it were a direct quote.

In brackets you note the author of the text you got this from and the date. You then do a full reference in your list of references at the end of the assignment. You note the author, title of book/journal etc, the date of publication, page reference.

This is how it sounded when it was explained to me however I'm a 1st year n00b also so don't take my word for it.

Yes, it's called paraphrasing. But first you need to identify which referencing your unit is using. For example, is it Harvard, footnote....ect.

Thjey say no footnotes only citations and then a reference list in the Harvard style.

I would probably start the sentence saying something like:

According to George, blah blah blah.. then end paragraph (George, 1997)

Something along those lines. You are best to double check this with the tutor tho

ETA: Chicago and Harvard are essentially the same style, technically speaking Harvard Referencing no longer exists.

It depends on how much is paraphrased, and whether it is your own 'voice', or someone elses. Usually, you would do the citing at the end of a paraphrase.
