When you chose the course you wanted to do, what made you decide to pick that one?

It led to a high paying career?
It led to a career you are interested in?
Picked a course that was broad cos you weere unsure?
etc etc...
Be honest!!!

I'm not exactly sure why I picked mine (speech path.) I guess I just figured it was something I could see myself doing, not tooooo hard to find work in it, and the course might be interesting...but then again, that could describe MANY courses, no idea why I ended up settling on that certain one...

I'm doing a B Economics @UNSW. I chose it because it was something that I liked and that I was good at. I had no idea what they pay was like until well into my first year and really, it didn't matter to me, because, as mentioned previously, I was good at it and I liked it.

I mostly decided based on what I was interseted in/good at, then I had a look at the uac book, open days, brochures, reputation of uni/course etc and had a look at employment/career and narrowed down my choices some more. Then at the open day day yesterday I made sure that the course I picked was
- something I was interested in and good at
- something that had good future employment
- something with a good salary
- something that allowed me to be flexible and change my mind if I wanted

and I am left with...................B chemical engineering/M biomedical engineering @unsw

my top preferences are courses/careers that seem interesting to me and i'd like to do for a living....my middle preferences are to do with subjects i'm good at and my bottom preferences are those that i know i'll get in for sure, but don't sound all too good.

I dont really know, I guess I've wanted to be a vet since before I can even remember, and thats what I've been focused on. I just didnt want a desk job, because I coulnt stand it, I wanted something that would be a challenge, not mind numbing.
The pay wasnt really considered, I mean its like any job, you get payed more the better you are and the longer you do it for. Theres also heaps of side tracks you can take, like work in quarantine, research, specialising, wildlife care, even teaching and stuff. So I guess the versatility appealed most.

It's almost 100% identical to Commerce (at UNSW atleast). The main difference is that you have to do an economics major and the cutoff is lower (91 last year).

My workload was about 20 hours/week (12 contact hours plus 8 extra at home), plus extra for assignments and exams, though it ranged from about 15 to 25. The recommended amount was 40 hours/week (10 hours/subject) and the closest I got to that was right at the start when I took it seriously.

If you go to all your timetabled classes, pay attention, then do your set questions then you should be right. If you still don't understand stuff, then do the recommended reading. In second semmester I only did the recommended reading for 2 subjects and then it was just the chapter summary for one and only half the time for the other.

u would have to consider it in all angles. But for me it was becasue of an interst that I had in which I could see myslef still enjoying it like 30 years down the track. I do admit that the payment is good too, but its not high up in my deisre to do the course. Even if it paid only like $22 000 per year, I would still do it because of the interest factor. I just dont want to be those guys who later when say u are 50 find out that what u are doing doesn't appeal to u anymore than going for a career change.

Maybe, If I get into commerce, I'll prolly jus do a single degree with double major, but if I get into Economics, I'll do a double degree with Arts (and a double major for the eco)

And thanks Bambul

I gonna do B Arts/Commerce at Usyd (hopefully)

I chose it because it led to a high paying career, was offered at usyd and that i am generally good at business/legal studies!!!
looking at the info for the course i found out i could major in government and international relations and sociology as part of the arts and commercial law as well as HRM and Industrial Relations!!!

I was talking to the dean of commerce/economics at USYd and he said that companies start picking out 2nd year students as potential employees for their firms, so economics graduates are very popular (and get highly paid if you are good).
