I really don't know. IUPAC should organise themselves.

I say stick with benzyl ethene. The other ones could be right but benzyl ethene is logical.

The polymer is not phenylethene. Additional polymers usually start with "poly". The polymer is polystyrene, and if you fancy systematicness, polybenzylethene.

Edit: To answer the original quesiton, reading/summarising the textbook will cause you to miss a lot of the 'right hand column' dotpoints, namely the "secondary source" and "first hand investigation" ones.

I just went and checked macmillan, it doesn't say anything. Surfing Chemistry says ethenyl benzene. So far all the textbooks agree and so does google.
