i agree to the benzyl ethene, its a systematic name

Dreamerish, can u confirm on the poly is called phenyl ethene?

or is the common name for benzyl ethene is phenyl ethene

I really don't know. IUPAC should organise themselves. :p

I say stick with benzyl ethene. The other ones could be right but benzyl ethene is logical.

The polymer is not phenylethene. :p Additional polymers usually start with "poly". The polymer is polystyrene, and if you fancy systematicness, polybenzylethene.

ARGH! Hahaha...

CSU says it's ethenylbenzene too.

\edit\ Google returns 1 result on "benzyl ethene" too.

Don't you make the longest chain the main one? And if so wouldn't that make it ethyl benzene?

Edit: To answer the original quesiton, reading/summarising the textbook will cause you to miss a lot of the 'right hand column' dotpoints, namely the "secondary source" and "first hand investigation" ones.

yea, but the benzene ring is a sub-group or what ever it is called!

can anyone tell me what phenyl ethene is? i am sure its the polymer or the common name

If hydrogen from an ethene molecule is replaced by a phenyl group (C6H5), the monomer is called styrene

um...what is a phenyl group? i think benzene is part of it

Phenyl appears to be another word for benzene.

Ah, here:

Some other names for styrene are:

vinylbenzene cinnamene phenylethene
vinylbenzol cinnamol phenylethylene
styrol styrolene ethenylbenzene

[21:19:40] <jm1234567890> mednez: it is ethenylbenzene

[21:19:16] <sunjet> MedNez
[21:19:19] <sunjet> what's the question?
[21:19:40] <MedNez> what's monomer of polystyrene?
[21:20:41] <sunjet> ethenylbenzene i think

[21:19:24] <MedNez> Haha
[21:19:26] <MedNez> itior!
[21:19:28] <MedNez> chemistry question
[21:20:04] <MedNez> Monomer for Polystyrene
[21:22:20] <MedNez> ethenylbenzene vs. benzyl ethene
[21:23:01] <itior> i'd say the former

Enough time wasted, I'll go with ethenylbenzene.

Look up, I already answered that question. Phenylethene is not the polymer name.

Mednez: Frustrating, huh? Try going to a tutoring class where a the teacher is a real chemist (gasp!) who contradicts everything you're taught at school. :p

i think so too,

so dreamerish its also ok to call it phenyl ethene, or benzyl ethene is both right. cause both styrene common name!!

and the polymer is polystyrene

from a site it says the when a hydrogen is replace by a phenyl group in ethene then its called phenyl ethene.

going by this logic, benzene is part of the phenyl group, so benzyl ethene is right!

ARR~` IT'S NOT BLOODY BENZYL ETHENE :p

I just went and checked macmillan, it doesn't say anything. Surfing Chemistry says ethenyl benzene. So far all the textbooks agree and so does google.

LOL.

Alright, it's settled then.

THE WINNER IS ETHENYL BENZENE.
