A gauge to monitor the thickness of cardboard as it is produced in a paper mill consists of a source of beta particles and a detector. The detector registers changes in the intensity of radiation passing through the cardboard.

Describe advantages of this type of gauge compared with a mechanical instrument such as calipers.

lol, if calipers are rulers, why would you use some radioactive measuring devices when you can measure its length with a ruler =S

Anyway i think through the use of a gauge, it allows you to measure the density of the cardboard.

lmao this ques was in our past paper?! maybe the gauge is more accurate, more convenient, and economic
calipers lOl

ADV: no mechanical contact, less wear and tare cost

DISADV: radiation source can endanger worker's health

What the hell?

This is the weirdest question I've ever seen.

Any school to put this question sure has a clueless science department.

We were just asked about radioactive used for medical purposes. Can't believe they specify the thickness measurement. It's in Conquering Chem but that's not important. I suppose the leakage detection is more useful.

which is why you dont study for trials that much, the questions are stupid and impossible

well you can go and do what you go to do, hours on end, stressing your brain out and then get into the chem exam, get a question like that and realise your study means nothing. you will write a bad answer. you will then worry, worry, worry about it for the rest of the exam. your marks for every following question will then decrease by a mark here and there

I however, with little study and a relaxed mind, will not be freaked out by such a question and will continue the exam in a relaxed manner.

the result will be that we get the same mark, which path do you wanna take?

But the result isn't that we get the same mark =\
I'm currently rank 1 at my school, and I've been practising a lot of chemistry. Who says you can't study a lot and be calm at the same time?
