That's not a good reason. If you chose your subjects based on scaling chances are you will end up hating them. I absoloutely loathe economics.

Not because you would do well?
no not only for that reason, I am interested in those subjects, scale well
and i'm also good at them

honestly scaling is not the only reason.

I do what I like and generally what I like is what i'm good at...

Scaling is an important thing to consider even though it shouldn't be a determining factor.

Thats a big misconception. They tend to scale quite similarly, but chemistry is usually higher (i'm not 100% but i'm sure lyounamu will know)
Yeah, you are right. My statement is based on 2006 & 2007 scaling report so I don't think there will be a flaw in your & my statement.

No. Scaling is not important to consider.

Seriously, don't even bother with subjects and scaling. In Year 11 and 12 you should be focusing on doing as well as you can in subjects, so when it comes time to pick subjects, pick what you enjoy and what you are good at. You will regret choosing subjects that scale well if you do poorly in them coz no matter what, 90s in low scaling subjects always tops 50s-60s in high scaling.

And proof that you're wasting your time considering the scaling of subjects:
- In 2001, two people from my school got 100 UAI's: One of them didn't do any sciences or maths, the other one didn't do science but did do general maths.
So forget about subject scaling and just choose what you enjoy and are passionate about.

Many top students try to take advantage of the scaling system. I never took scaling system into account when I made my subject selection. However, it is good to be aware of the scaling and take advantage of it.

For example, I tend to put more effort into low-scaling subjects like Business Studies, Biology and English because I know that dropping one mark in that subject will hurt more than losing one mark in high scaling subject like Mathematics Extension 1.

I wasn't saying that scaling should be considered when you choose subject. I was simply implying that scaling system is important to consider in mind when you want to get an approximate estimate of UAI that you wish to achieve.

I took scaling/moderation/alignment etc into consideration when I made my choices. Particularly moderation; whatever subjects I wasn't coming first in during Yr 11 in, I dropped for Yr 12. :)

Lol. I guess I will be following your path when it coems to dropping subject (i.e. dropping subject I am not coming first in).

So you basically kept all the subjects you came first in, yeah?

english extensions dont scale as well in general as ppl seem to think

and theyre a lot of work so only do them if u srsly have a passion for english

and with chem the reason it scales high is cos its HARD.

Just do what you enjoy and stay away from pretty much anything with the word 'studies' in it.

Then your stupid. Doesnt matter how fantastic the scaling is, asking any 08'er or before and they will tell you scaling means jack all unless you do well in the subject. You should be picking those subjects because you have a genuine interest in those subjects. duh

You didnt say that before, you said the the good scaling was the reason you chose them. Thats a smart reason to be choosing subjects, it will get you further then simply good scaling

i'm thinking of doing
ext 2 eng.
ext 2 maths..[contemplating of doing ext 1..see how i go in sc]
physics
legal studies
economics or music

none of the subjects were influenced by scaling, except for the ext 2 maths :p

i just wanted to know whether legal studies, economics or music are scaled well...i heart music is average so people tend to go ext. music

any help ?

Economics > Legal Studies > Music 1

Economics > Music 2 > Legal Studies

Economics has got pretty good scaling in comparison to other subjects. Legal Studies' scaling is pretty average with Music 1 being the lowest out of these 3.
