Hello, I'm a first year and still not entirely familiar with all parts of usyd camperdown/darlington campus.
Can anyone recommend any secret, hidden places to retreat to with plenty of free space to sit down and eat lunch while catching up on readings without being crowded (i can never find a desk in Fisher library) particularly pretty courtyards or gardens! Thank you :)

Try the upper levels of Fisher. Or the tunnel in between the Law library and Fisher. Not really secret but you can try the small lawn area beside The Quadrangle on Science Rd for a 'retreat' and also the grass area on the Engineering/Darlington campus.

EDIT: There is also the Vice-Chancellor's garden (never heard of anyone staying there for long) and the garden leading to Manning Rd at The Quadrangle.

I sometimes eat/read in the courtyards in the Old Teachers College, but they're tiny. There's a pretty courtyard in the Anderson Stuart Building, too. If I'm napping I usually just head to the grass near the tennis courts that are past Fisher.

You might also find tables and chairs free in those glass corridors you can see from Eastern Avenue in the New Law Building, too. Bonus: it's easy to see from the Avenue if they're free, as long as the blinds aren't down.

Edit: Agree with passionx, if you get there in the morning, there's usually space free on the upper levels of Fisher. Plus, view.

Most of this: http://lostoncampus.com.au/usyd/main/secret-places
I also suggest the tables near Charles Perkins which is at the very end of the campus. It's no courtyard but it is pretty nice and modern and have quite a number of tables. I would have also said the hidden seating area outside the Law Building on the side but there is currently construction over there :/ Or just go to Victoria Park, heaps of space.

Tip: If you want to use computer at peak times, HIGHLY suggest going to Madsen Building computer labs, quiet and less people usually but need to always check there's no class in there.
