Herrow! Recommend Me Some Arts Subjects To Do (1 Viewer)

I have to do 12 credit points from the arts faculty to complete my silly music degree.

What ones do you recommend and what does it involve?

Which ones should I never ever ever in my life touch?

The handbook tells me jack all. It's "oh here's psychology, its pretty neat, we're pretty awesome, here are some subjects associated with psychology in which I won't go into detail with but you know like whatever".

I have an interest in writing, media and cultural studies. I don't want to learn another language, and I'm not so hot on history. They have to be sexy subjects that don't require pre-requisite subjects.

You guys would be awesome help and would save me about twenty million emails.

i'm not even at uni yet but from what you've given us, i'd say you'd be great at either english or gender studies.

english because usyd arts has an excellent reputation in this field. and gender studies because its probably the most useful out of the cultural studies courses offered.

Psych is a science, so unless it's counted as an Arts unit for the purposes of your degree, you'll have to forget about it.

In terms of both what you could and what you'd like to take I'd say that your best bets would be first year Anthropology, Sociology, Art History, English or Philosophy. Of those I only have first hand knowledge of Anthropology, and as far as I'm concerned it is (or was) quite interesting. There are quite a few second-year-on units that may float your boat, but most of them seem to require so many junior units from the Arts faculty or permission from the head of the relevant department before you can enrol.

Also, I was hoping for more specifics. I mean, English looks great but there are a lot of individual subjects within that field I have little idea about.

!st year history is pretty bludgy and easy but the EASIEST of all subs is apparently sociology. I think hsty is more interesting than socialogy though. Ick.

Actually, you can do Psychology through the Arts department I myself, and many another B Arts students are doing Psychology through Arts. Psychology 1 (psyc1001 and 1002) are both very intense courses, however. If you just want to cruise through the Arts part of your degree, I do not recommend you do Psych. (Many people will disagree, however, saying that Psych is "dead easy"...but meh, I don't see how.)

I heard PHIL subjects are boring, but I can't comment. Gender studies involves a whole bunch of "hot girls", and from what I've experienced, a small number of boys (but incredibly horny males, who only choose gender studies for one reason...to pray on the girls) lol

I also have to commend the ENGL department at Usyd. They are fantastic! The tutors/lecturers are so nice, and so approachable! The content is simple, as long as u go to lectures (no lectures on the net sorry to say). The only bad thing is that u have to buy novels which tend to weigh up to a heavy cost. You can always go 2nd hand. Assignments are usually easy, and the exams are straight-forward. Like I said, as long as u go to lectures, you'll ace it. I don't recommend ENGL1015 Inventing Modernity *shudders*

Anthro and Sociology are usually fun, Philosophy if its the first year should be pretty introductory

Don't do Engl1005- Language and Image.

Fiction Film and Power was good. Second year english subjects are much better though.

History 1044 was enjoyable- world during period of both the world wars- spanish civil war section was fun.... um thats about all I liked from first year. Sociology is so fucking easy its not funny. But boring as batshit and annoying.

I think I've got to be the only usyd student to do ENGL1005 and LIKE it lol I absolutely loved it.

Stef, it's all grammar. So if that stuff scares u, don't do it. But being the nerd I am, I really liked it

Art Hist was great in 1st year! It's a subject with NO exams, hence the reason I chose it. Really nice way to get into art and a good introduction overall!

Ancient Hist with Alastair Blanshard is just the best! I'm doing 2nd year Ancient purly because of him!

Good choice so far :$ That subject and others like it almost got me to do a straight B Arts at USyd, they seem quite full of awesome.

If nothing else, you'll love David Braddon Mitchell (DBM to his students) - he ties in first place with the best lecturer I've ever had.

I also heard Art History is great in any year. You get to visit museums, majority of subjects don't have exams and suposedly it's really interesting. But I guess it depends whether you wanna learn about Art lol

You being a music student (you are, aren't you?), I would recommend some of the units the Performance Studies dept. has to offer.

Regarding these, there are know first year Performance units; instead, you need have completed two junior arts units in one subject. So, I think you ought to qualify(?).

Both 'Being There' and 'An Audience Prepares' are quite good. Being there is more theory heavy and encompasses the analysis of a diverse array of performance types on genres. 'An Audience Prepares', which I proffered, is less theory heavy and involves the close analysis of western drama (you have to go see plays and write essays on them).

If Performance Studies doesn't interest you, I recommend English. A few people have rubbished the 'Inventing Modernity' unit and stated that it's too disconnected etc. Despite this, I recommend Inventing Modernity as it serves as a good introduction to the English canon as a whole (well, from the Romantic Period to now).

Jem also mentioned Language and Image. I didn't mind this unit (but hey, I'm a huge English geek) but I must warn you: it's all about grammar. If you take it, you'll leave with a heightened ability to analysis language, but whatever book they choose to play with for the semester will send cold shivers down your spine for all eternity thereafter.


Oh, and, first year philosophy is good.
