It'd be helpful if you could at least state what you'll be using it for. :)

Are you after portability, battery life etc..?

Don't mean to gatecrash your thread, but I'm also looking to buy one for uni. If anybody knows of any good value lightweight/portable options with good battery life, please point me in the right direction. (I'm not a huge fan of the EEE - PCs for some reason.)

The "netbooks" are probably your best option if you're looking for good value, portability and battery life. They're perfect for doing uni assignments or surfing the web on-the-go.

And you could probably buy five of them for under 2k.

yeah netbooks.

and macs have like 5hrs battery, but their OS needs getting used to. And they are expensive, but <$2000, like..1800 or 1400 or something, i think around 1400 with student discount (uni student that is) depending on how u customize it (wat cpu/ram/extras u choose).

pretty much portability and graphics for gaming.
I was wondering, how long does an average battery last?

what kinda gaming?

if ur talking about the latest games then u'd need a good graphics card.

and good graphics card = shithouse battery since gfx cards chew up power.

average battery is around 3 hours i think. My one (pretty much a medium end gaming laptop) gets 1.5hrs on full power mode and 2.5hrs on battery saver.

Macbooks get around 5 hours.

Netbooks i dunno, probably 3-4hrs.

Portability and gaming don't go together at all - you will really struggle to find a laptop with a decent graphics card with a screen smaller than 15"

Also, GPUs take lots of battery as other ppl have said - you wont get more than 2 hours out of your laptop

So you'll have to make a decision as to what you want before you can look at specific computers

Good gaming performance = larger then 15.4" screen = EXTREMELY bad battery life = expensive! (>$2500).

um, the ram is not bad, the cpu is not that good, the graphics card is awesome.

you wont be able to use ur graphics to its full potential unless u have around 2.5ghz dual core cpu to back it up.

my laptop came with 2.53ghz dual core cpu and 4gigs ram, and an ati hd 3650 (512mb), my gfx card is a medium end gaming card, and i can run games awesomely.

That geforce 120m is relatively new so i dont know much about it, but it seems pretty good, just ur cpu mite need to be a bit better to take full advantage, but im not 100% sure, mabe it'll be fine.

for that price its not bad, but the battery power will be shithouse, i just take my power brick with me to uni coz my laptop battery is shit too.

cpu's not bad, ram is not bad either, being ddr2 800, but graphics card..

Notebookcheck: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450

if u look under class, that particular card comes in the middle of the class 3 category, ie low end gaming.

My gfx card, 3650, is in the middle of the class 2 category, medium end gaming.
I got an Asus M51Va, i got it in a myer sale, the laptop (2.53ghz dual core, 4gb ram, that gfx card, 320gb harddrive) came with a carry bag, 250gb external harddrive, a mouse, and ms office home and student 07.
Price was $1999, i got it for around $1500 thru haggling and employee discount.

That deal comes out every now and then, look out for it.

edit: so ur looking for something for under $2k, this one was for 2k, but came with a bunch of extras. Look out for deals like that, i know myer normally have those kinda deals when they have electronics sales.

THATS the one that i got.

Very very good, no problems at all, only minor stuff, like a game doesnt work, so i disable UAC in vista, problem solved, apart from that ive had no problems at all, loving my laptop atm.

Myer had a deal about a month ago, the laptop with carry bag, mouse, and ms office home and student 07, the deal i got, sept last year, was all the above, but with a 250gb external hdd as well.

I'd recommend getting it, maybe wait to see if myer has another combo deal, or get the lappy on its own and save $400.

perfect example of how the mac is only suggested by people who've already been suckered into buying it

AND

people who suggest buying it dont even have any good reasons for suggestion.

overpriced pieces of shit made up of parts that are equivalent to other laptops that are 2 years old.
