There really isn't a hard-and-fast rule. It might also depend on the amount. Smaller short-term loans are likely to be around 90-180 days but the larger size end of short-term loans might be up to a year.

My text book (business studies in action) says a short term loan is up to a 12 month period

I have always used less than 1 year is short-term.

And long-term as being more than 1 year.
Long-term could be for 100 years. (long-term as far as i know doesn't have a time limit).

Also, if you come across something in a textbook. It WILL ALWAYS be marked correct in the HSC as you have learnt it from the textbook.

You didn't want to know what places for external/internal sources of funds did you?
