My comp freezes anytime it wants (start-up, login screen, checking mail, ...etc) and my analysis of it was a fried motherboard. Since it's a 478 socket motherboard, no one sells the bloody thing no more. So I have to buy new parts.

I need to get new:

Motherboard - something descent. (with DDR2, SATA and PCIe support)
Processor - Core Duo?
Video Card - Something descent (PCIe)
LCD monitor - descent one. about 19"

and my budget is around $1k. Can't stretch it much unfortunately :(

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Thanks fellas. Yeah I forgot to list RAM.

I have an 80 GB SATA HDD; DVD/CD R/WR, floppy drive (dont need), 450W power suply, Case (obviously :p), keyboard, mouse and speaker. Only need to buy new motherboard, since the old one fried, and pieces with compatibility issues: GPU, RAM (2GB), CPU. And also a new monitor, since my CRT monitor is about 7 years old. Can't be bothered fixing it again.

That's a good combo - although Conroe cored C2D's are better than Allendale cored ones. Get a C2D that starts with e6XXX.
Then he has to compromise on everything else and bottleneck his system.

not a dell fan.

I've looked around and "came up" with this:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (1.86 GHz) LGA775 $259
Gigabyte 965-S3 i965 $155
256MB Powercolor x1950pro $277
2x 1GB A-DATA DDR2-800 $225
19" Benq FP92W 5ms DVI Widescreen LCD $285

tatal $1201

I don't know a lot about computer hardware. My previous comps usually were of the bottleneck type as waf mentioned. I want this one to be a balanced system. Not top or bottom of the line but somewhere in between. Mainly used for school and uni work. Might play Oblivion once in a while but that's it for gaming.
