2.
Predict the products of the electrolysis of solutions of (i) sodium fluoride and (ii) nickel bromide.
(a) Write the half equation for the reaction occurring at the cathode and the reaction at the anode.
(b) Write the equation for the overall reaction and calculate the minimum voltage required for the reaction you have described.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3.
You planned and carried out an experiment to compare the rates of corrosion of iron and an identified form of steel.
(a) Identify the form of steel you used and the material you used as the source of this type of steel.
(b) Describe the method you used, including a labelled diagram of any apparatus.
(c) Identify the difficulties associated with determining the rate of corrosion.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4.
Examine the following graph

(a) Identify the relationship shown in the graph.
(b) Based on the information in the graph, a student predicted that corrosion would be faster in fresh water than sea water. Discuss.

5.
The diagram shows how magnesium and copper are often attached as shown, to prevent corrosion of underground iron or steel tanks.

(a) Does copper or magnesium prevent the tank corroding? Explain your answer using the table of standard potentials.
(b) In the arrangement shown in the figure, does the tank become the cathode or the anode? Justify your answer by indicating the flow of electrons between the metals.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6.
(a) Explain the factors which would lead to the prediction that corrosion would be slow at great depth.
(b) Describe how sulfate reducing bacteria increase the rate of corrosion.

You should attempt the questions then ask for help with whatever you get wrong. Do your own homework.
