HELP ME PLEASE!!! combined commerce @ usyd (1 Viewer)

i live wayyy out west near penrith/hawkesbury, and next year i was thinking about doing B Com/B Sc at usyd.

only problem is, it takes nearly 1.5 hours to get there by train, and another 1.5 hours to get back from where i live :S

so i was wondering

1. what is the workload like for a combined commerce degree
2. what is the timetable like
3. how many hours on campus per week
4. how many days on campus per week


pleaaase help me, im so confused about next year! thanks


also, would somebody please be able to provide me with some examples of careers one could undertake for each major in commerce, and average wages? thnks

just travel and do work on the train. i live like 2 hrs away from uni and i'm still coping. (not doing comm @ usyd tho, i'm doing acst + appfin @ macquarie)

My brother did combined commerce/law at UOW, and he managed to cope quite well with the workload. If you put the effort in, you should be fine. He went to university 3-4 days a week, but that all depends on what sort of timetable you are able to get with your course.

But essentially, if you're interested in commerce or are passionate about having a career in commerce, the workload should not overly influence your final decision.

I will also be traveling 1.5 hours, but to UNSW instead. Although 1.5 hours might seem like a long time, you can use the time to read/study. And if you find the traveling too difficult, you can always move closer next year.

It works out timetables for UNSW, but it also lists the hours at university and should give you a general idea of how much time you are going to spend at USyd campus each week.

I have a few friends who are studying commerce/science. The work load for the first year isn't too bad. I think for a standard timetable you take a couple of maths units, one science one of your choice and two commerce units, usually accounting and economics. Though, it is always recommended in writing that you should spend about 6 to 9 hours a week on each subject, many people don't and pass easily.

As for the hours per week, in the first year it is around 18 to 22 hours which isn't too bad. First semester was for fives days and the second semester was for four days.

You do have to travel for a while back and worth and it will probably get tiring especially with those 8 am starts and possible later finishes. However, if you're studying something you like (even if it's only a slight interest) it'll definitely help with motivation. You might be able to arrange some sort of accommodation with financial backing from centrelink and the university.

As for majors, I think you might be considering too far ahead but it is always good to get ideas for what you might want to major in. I don't know much about each to provide any useful information.

I'm in Commerce/Arts (though not at USyd), so I'll comment generally on the Commerce aspect.

Workload: I did more arts than commerce subjects this year due to my degree structure, but I found that though the Commerce subjects had a higher workload than my Arts subjects, it was easier to do well. Assessment was usually a 20% midsem, 20% assignment, 60% exam. Others had a 10% midsem quiz, 20% individual assignment, 20% group assignment and 50% exam. Exams are worth a lot in commerce.

I'm in a HR major, so my first year core units were Business Communications, Economics (my uni lumps Micro and Macro together in first year, others do them separately), Accounting, Business Law and Introductory Management. Other majors have to do Stats and Marketing. This will vary across uni's, but you've at least got a fair idea of what you have to do.

Timetable/Hours: I had three days a week last year, and will have two days next semester. Hours is generally 10-15, though since you're looking at combining with Science it will be more hours due to labs. Commerce subjects will generally have a lecture and workshop/tute, no more than 4 hours total per subject.

thanks for your reply i was also considering majoring in HR but now im not sure because i dont understand what kind of job thatd lead to

does anybody from USYD know if you HAVE to choose a major for commerce/science in your first year? or do you choose them in year 2? also, it says that for the bachelor of science you can choose electives from the other faculties... am i able to choose at least one 6cp elective per semester? because i want to learn a language, such as spanish, and if i could take up each level each semester i should be able to learn it through uni
