I have stuffed up my internal assessments and my ranks are atrocious. I'm not sure why but I didn't study much for any of my exams, I didn't even cram. Although I do all the high-scaling subjects such as Maths Ext2, Chemistry etc, I don't think they will negate the detrimental affects of my horrific internal marks/ranks. I was aiming to do
B Commerce/ B Science (advanced mathematics) @ UNSW which requires and ATAR of 98.15
Even with the 5 bonus points I don't believe I can achieve this result. I posted my ranks in the ATAR and HSC Marks Guidance section and people have predicted my ATAR to be 92.

Please give me motivation. Life seems pointless right now. I have been a top 50 student at my school for the past 5 years and was aiming for 99+ at one stage before this happened. My school is ranked 4th but I've dropped so much I really don't know what to do.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think it was the socialising. When I tried studying for my exams I just didn't have any motivation. It's like I wanted to just get through the exam and forget about it. Idk why it happened in year 12. In year 11 and all the other years if there was an exam to study for I would just do it, no questions asked. When I do study though I can achieve the marks I want. After my half-yearlies I knew I needed to really pick it up, which I did. I ended up gunning the June Assessments and then I got lazy again and stuffed up the trials. I'm sure I can get band 6 for all my subjects externally but this might be too little too late because of my ranks.
Is there anything I can do besides study really hard for the HSC?

just realise the HSC is not the end of ur life. uni is WAY more important. when u start uni ppl who got 99.95 are on the same level as ppl who got 80 bcuz it is a totally different ball game. just do ur best for the rest of the hsc, get a respectable atar, get into a course through bonus points, enjoy life for the break after hsc and before start of uni and in uni just refind motivation to study and hopefully ur life will be bak on track.

Seeing your ranks

I'm putting 90+ if you put the effort in the HSC

HSC is only one small part of your life. I remember when I did it, it seemed so daunting and like "the end of the world" if you didnt do well. However, once you get to university, you realise that the HSC is a very minor part of your education. Just because you get a low ATAR doesnt mean your doomed whilst getting a high ATAR doesnt mean that you will succeed in your career. There are many people with high ATAR's who drop out of university and there are many people who succeed whilst doing poorly in High school (one guy I do law with was a year 10 droppout, who transfered in from TAFE). Just remember that there are always other ways to get into your courses.

Also, there is 50% of the HSC left to go, so anything can happen for you at this point ATAR-wise.

You go to Baulko. You'll be fine. :)

Seriously, you can get far if you really want it. My boss didn't do well in his HSC, tried his butt off in uni (Wollongong), became a partner in a decent law firm, and is becoming a barrister at the end of the year. Barristers charge like $5500 a day. So - yeah. You'll be fine. Furthermore, people like me, who did well in HSC, but are getting lazy in uni, we're not doing too well. :p So there's hope.

Thank you to everyone for the motivation. I guess its not the end of life after all (especially after hearing about the law student who transferred from TAFE- that is insane). I know I can get mid 90's for externals so I will aim for that and just hope for the best.

Really appreciate the advice, Thanks.

for you = just get the ATAR high enough to get into your course. then you're done for the HSC. The HSC content is pretty useless for uni unless if it's Maths (but there's heaps of stuff that changes in maths too, i.e. not being allowed to use cistheta :p)

once you get to uni, you've learned your lesson from the HSC. from there, do the best you can. Anything is possible.
as for me if I don't get into commerce, Imma go all out on my maths subjects in the science degree and get into double degree commerce. :)

Hey,
I know where all randoms, but i assure you that we've ALL been in, or will be, in a situation like this. There is no reason to give up.

Your attending the 4th highest ranked schol in NSW, doing subjects with good scaling and you seem confident in your ability and potential. Trust me, your in a much better situation than most.

Life dosn't always work the way we planned it to be. But, you can't have a weak character and a passive personality. I did in fact, feel this way! But people did help me and support me to see hope within my situation, so thats why i'm doing the same for you :)

hahaha, all the best!

Dude im sorry to hear that.. Btw dw you'll get there!!! yes I was in the same situation as you.. I studied really hard for trials but in the last minute i got lazy and didn't too well.. as i expected.. But im still going to work hard because i believe i will get my ATAR

But you have to envision an optimistic future and just move and study your best for externals... I've failed 2units maths and the only choice i got is to pray and study my arse off :(.. don't lose your motivation now. :) good luck dude and hope you get into your course!!

and you go to a nice school of course and have a damn strong cohort unlike mine... rank in the 200's..... :)

If you don't get into B Commerce/ B Science (Advanced Mathematics), why don't you just get into B Commerce or B Science (Adv. Math) and transfer after one year? You've learnt your lesson the hard way this year, but you won't make the same mistake at uni. You can get into B Commerce through bonus points, then just work your hardest next year and transfer into the course you want.

All the best, and remember that the HSC and school in general, is just the beginning, so don't get too beat up about it, i'm sure you can do great in the hsc and you will get into the course you want, whether it be in 2012 or 2013.

Hmm... you're complaining about a potential ATAR of 92?

Think about the 92% of the state who are going to get lower.

The difference between you and them however is that some will try getting into their university courses the hard way as opposed to just giving up.
