hello, everybody
I am first year student, and i am thinking what coures should i enrol in session2.
i really want to do actuarial study, however i did not do "MATH1151 Maths for Actuarial Studies & Finance 1A " in seesion 1, but the QMA. i realise that majoring actuarial require Maths for Actuarial Studies & Finance 1A or Higher math instand of QMA, QMB in the first year. now the problme is if i can choose Maths for Actuarial 1B in sesseion 2 then come back to finihsh 1A next year? (even it is possible, was it too hard to doing 1B before finish 1A?)
...and, is the higher math 1A running in every session? (Maths for Actuarial may not running every session due to the lower demand, not sure) is it possible to do higher math 1A ,but not doing the QMB(core coure in first year commerce)?

thank you

ai ya.. bad bad bad.

QMA is useless for actuarial study.

You need to do 1A.. I'm not sure, but they should offer it to those who failed the session 1 course.

Its not a big deal - just a bit frustrating for you.
So, instead of choosing an elective of your choice, (outside your major/double major requirements) QMA will be classed as your elective.

What if I am doing 1151 and decided not to do actuarial, do I have to do QMA?

No.
They consider 1151 > QMA , so you dont need to do it if you change majors.
(Thats what i've heard)

But if you fail 1151, and decide to not do acturial no more - then you would have to do QMA.

hi...if ur really desparate in doing actuarial studies, by all means try out ACTL1001 in Semester 2, but a lot of what we've done in MATH1151 atm will lead on to this stuff...especially probability...

On the plus side, there is no prerequisite in doing ACTL1001, but MATH1151 is only offered in Semester 1.

Not much you can really do, in short you've basically 'wasted' a year...hope this helps...

You have the most terrible luck,

MATH1141/MATH1151 do not get offered in S2, only S1 each year.
MATH1241/MATH1251 are offered in S2 only...and are prerequisites of the above.

Only MATH1131/MATH1231 are offered in both S1 & S2.

So, essentially

S2, 2005: Do ACTL1001 and ECON1203 (QMB)

S1, 2006: Do MATH1151, ACTL2001 (requires pre-req of MATH1151 or ECON1202) AND ACTL2002 (requires pre-req of MATH1251 or ECON1203)

S2, 2006: Do MATH1251 (requires pre-req MATH1151) AND ACTL2003 (requires pre-req of ACTL2002)

there's no point in doing QMB if you are going to do actuarial major

Stephen how are you going right now with QMA?
you have to understand that QMA is a very easy course and if you choose to do MATH1151 it is like doing four times the work of QMA

MATH1131 is the lowest maths
MATH1141 is lower maths + more stuff in detail + more challenging questions
MATH1151 is everything in the lower courses + 25% more :D sound fun eh? eh?? heheh

Oh my god, i just wasted time and money there. by the way, if i follow your suggestion, will i graduate in 3 years as normal (without overload or summer school)? and someone just said if i do Math1141 later, the QMA become selected option, then what is selected option? how many would i have with a double degree....sorry that having so many question

i just finished the QMA final exam today, ummm not too bad, i can do all of those question and finished it with about 15min free time at the end. there are maybe some calculation mistakes, it won't be too bad.

was actuarial just toooooooo hard??
i didn't choose actuarial as the major at the beginning of the uni becasue someone told me it was toooooo hard, it scare me. but when the uni is going, i meet a few friends are doing acturial (first year as well), i saw what they did is not that really hard (some stuff like 4u math). Maybe i am wrong, coz that just something in first year, the next 2 year maybe.....>< make me crazy!!

now i still thinking should i do that as a major, because i only can pick up math1141 next year... ummmm damn.

anyway, thank you very much!

weee.. haven't been on BOS for a while.. but I'm back.

To the original thread starter, check with the actuarial studies office. It may be (and has been done before) to do MATH1131 S2 and MATH1231 in summer and thus 'catch' up. You might miss out on ACTL1001 but it can be done later.

And if you find QMA difficult, I wouldn't recommend actuarial. If you don't mind doing maths, then it might be for you. In high school I didn't particularly enjoy maths, but I was good at it. Now doing ACTL2002, I like statistics, since its easy:)

Do maths 1131 in next semester and 1231 in summer.

in 2006 , do ACTL 2001, 2002 in semester 1 and do 2003 and 1001 in semester 2

i ve got a friend who is a middle year entrant and is doing courses under that schedule.

however , make sure to get good marks for 1131 and 1231 (85+),
not sure whether you r allowed to do actl if your 1131 and 1231's marks are low

i enjoy doing maths, and not too bad on it (i think) 3u + 4u= 189 in HSC and i know the requirement for math1141 is 186, for math1151 is 180

is math1131 ok?

since the online handbook state the requirement as follow:

MATH1141 Higher Mathematics 1A OR
MATH1151 Maths for Actuarial Studies & Finance 1A
MATH2141 Higher Mathematics 1B OR
MATH1251 Maths for Actuarial Studies & Finance 1B

thats cause they became lazy in uni. if you did well in 3u/4u, and you maintain that level of work/motivation, it won't be too hard.
