Hey!
If anybody could help, i would be eternally grateful!
I need examples of plants for the changes in:

-physical conditions in the environment
-chemical conditions in the environment and
-competition for resources

I have examples for animals/insects, but I desperately need some examples for plants.

Thanks!

Re: HELP!Examples of physical conditions/chemical conditions and competition for reso

Hi, I'm not quite sure these are examples but as long as you understand the concept, I'm sure you can think of more examples.

Physical change
So an example of this would be the emergence/adaption of fire-resistance in Australian plants as a result of the arid environment prone to fires. Another example perhaps would be a change from rainforest to woodland, dry schlerophyll and grasslands (from change in Australian climate). The saltbush increased its tolerance to salinity and (from the drying out of Australia which increased salinity levels).

Chemical change
Resistance to herbicides. For example, wildoats which are spread across the main wheat growing areas.

Competition for resources
Taller trees in rainforests generally have large canopies that increase sunlight collection. These canopies however block out the sun and prevent sunlight reaching the ground and as a result, smaller trees are inhibited from growing. This decreases the competition for light, nutrients and water for that particular tall tree. (No surrounding competition).
I had another plant that produced chemicals surrounding it so other plants could not grow nearby but I can't remember the name. Sorry, I'll have a look later today.

Hope this helps!

Re: HELP!Examples of physical conditions/chemical conditions and competition for reso

Those are great

I'd probably add

Physical conditions: Temperature

We are currently experiencing human influenced climate change on scales exceeding most historical records this has led to a number of changes in plant physiology including earlier leaves and flowering in documented across European. In addition many alpine specialists are becoming extinct at lower altitudes (it's becoming too warm for them) and are colonizing higher altitudes that were previously too cold.

Chemical change: Soil Acidity
The classic is hydrangeas which change colour depending on the type of soil they are in, there are also a number of hydrangea species that are presumably adapted to the different soil pH in their different locations

Competition for resources
Light is the best one, otherwise there is a nice example for space, pine needles (dropped by pine trees) are toxic to other types of tree ensuring that there is little competition to pine trees in areas where they are found (this creates pine forest)

I think the plant is called spinifex or porcupine grass, and use allepathy to eliminate competition.

Can some1 check this plz?

physical:
The industrial revolution of Europe lead to increased production of oxides into the atmosphere(Chemical change), which caused darkening of forests and plantation (physcial change). The darker coloured environment allow darker peppered moth to be camoflauged. The lighter coloured moths were more exposed to predation. This resulted in a decrease in number of white peppered moths, as evolution suggest the survival of the fittest?

Chemical:

The nerve poison DDT was fatal on 98% of all mosquitoes exposed to it at first. However in just months it has dropped to 53%. The mosquitoes populaion have declined while those with DDT resistance variations survived. This causes evolution to adjust the whole species more resistant to DDt as ofspring of surviving mosquitoes are likely to survive as well.

Resource:
brids on Gallopi island have first came in to occupy the same niche. There are not enough resources, and this causes some bird to die off, or causes resource partitioning where slightly different niches is adapted to survive in the same environment.

The production of chemicals to prevent the growth of other plants nearby is called allelopathy. A good example is the casuarina, especially if your looking for Australian examples.
