Fe reacts with silver nitrate to make Fe 2+ and Silver metal. Why in half equations the nitrate is not involved? is it a spectator ion?

Yes, nitrate ions are the spectator ions. Electron-transfer (2 of them) goes from metal (Fe) to metal ion (Ag+) through a medium (electrolyte - nitrate ions in this case), thus only the metal and metal ions are getting oxidized/reduced.
