An ADSL modem is needed, and nowadays, it is a lot better to buy a router so that you have a hardware firewall between you and the internet. You can buy boxes which have ADSL Modem/Router/Switch in one.

Getting a router makes it much easier if at any time you want to add another computer to the network, because to connect to the internet you simply have to connect through ethernet (or wireless if its available in the box), you will be assigned an ip and you will be using the internet in no time.

Probably a good idea to go through different ISP's (internet service providers) depending on your current one. Prices dont differ hugely, but if you're on telstra or optus at the moment, my advice is to switch. Counting upload is just way too harsh for the money you pay.

all the ISP's in Australia are there.

Just a suggestion, check out ADSL2+ if you can. In most place it is available, it is going for the same price as standard ADSL.

Main thing, do your research before you sign up to a ISP.

To answer you question,
ADSL modem is required. You will mostly find a ADSL2+ router in the shops for good prices. Filters will often be included in the box. Wireless routers are even better depending on the scenario.

Any questions, please ask.
