I thought it would be good to have a thread where all the major health related occupations were compared with each other in terms of their salaries.

Please post what you think the average salary for the following are (assuming that they all have had five years experience):

----------------

General Practitioner

General Dentist

Pharmacist

Optometrist

----------------
Any other occupation I should I add?
And which you would prefer if you're interested in the health/medical field.

As always any comment is greatly appreciated. Thanks. :)

5 years after u finish your MBBS you'd be a registrar and hopefully enrolled in a training college with a salary package some where around 90k. spend 3-6 yrs in there you could come out as a specialist and earn anywhere from 200k to 1mil+ if ur lucky and/or really good.

Can't say much about Pharmacists or Optom, but from personal experience shared by my extended family of Doctors and Dentists. It seems the Dentist are fairing better :)

Doctors:

Uncle - 10 years. Salary: $180k/yr - Note he has just gone back to Uni to get a Dentistry degree and now makes $250k/yr.

Cousin A - 2 years. Salary: $90k/yr
Cousin B - 1 year. Salary: $70k/yr

Dentist:
Uncle (as above). $250k/yr
Cousin C - 1 year. Salary: $150k/yr
Aunty - 12 years. Salary: $350k/yr

You do the comparison...

While I'm lucky to be a dentist. I'd still rather be a Doctor because they're more respected! =(

This website also says that either a dentistry or med degree are required to do the diploma - myfuture :: Courses and Programs—Course Information - Postgraduate Diploma of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
That link you posted is referring to the Melb Uni link I posted above.

I'd imagine doing both medicine and dentistry degrees at UNI would be very time consuming, expensive and painful...
That's how it used to be if you wanted to be a fully qualified maxillofacial specialist surgeon. I think you get some exemptions if you have either degree.

Well, looking at a statement the other day at work... I can tell you that our radiologist gets $350k a year, just from our 3 local hospitals. I'm not sure whether he reports on any others, but we did $410,000 worth of xrays/us and we only made a $63k profit, he got the rest.

He works no days at our place, he sits in his office and we sent the images online. If we're lucky, he'll do a Dictaphone report straight away, and a written report within 2. Same with the other two hospitals, as he's based in Newcastle.

Not sure if he does any in his area, I just saw that from our three hospitals alone, he received $300k

He never tells us when he is on holidays, and there was a massive error in a report once. So I rang him, and he's like "plz call back in 5"

So 10 minutes later I called him, and he roars "DON'T EVER BOTHER ME WITH SUCH THINGS AGAIN!"

I was like dude, your official report had twin a as being 119cm long
