Hi, I'm currently in year 7 and I'm looking into transferring to Penrith high school in year 8 through the HAST test. Has anyone who has done the HAST exam in year 7 know what types of questions there are in mathematical reasoning? Is it really that difficult? Also, if anyone made it into Penrith in year 7 when doing HAST, what were your results?

I got into a different HAST school in yr 8 but I'm not sure if the test is still the same because this was 5 years ago.

I don't really remember the exact question types in mathematical reasoning, but they were definitely on the easier side. They required some logical thinking, but I felt like a lot of the questions were deceptively hard, so try not to overthink them

Oh ok. Do you know approximately how many people applied? Btw, I know there are sample tests you can get from the Acer shop for year 8 entry, but idk about yr 9, 10, or 11 entry. I’ve heard the yr 9 naplan tests are similar to HAST though.

When i was in yr 9 i sat the hast test for hurlstone ag. i know ur in year 7 so the tests will be different but a consistent theme across all the tests is time. for abstract and mathematical reasoning, u need to be as fast as possible. i mean maximum one minute for every question. for abstract, u need to just recognise a puzzle's pattern and apply it to the next shape. and for math, honestly all u can do is just practice and get the overall idea of the types of questions. as for how many ppl applied for hurlstone ag, the whole hall was filled out for everyone trying for year 9 entry so around 200 ppl for year 9 alone.

So for year 9, how many questions did you have for abstract reasoning and mathematical reasoning, and how much time did you have?

Honestly I forgot but there was an allocated time for all 4 papers, though im pretty sure the time varies for each paper. The test is on paper and you get supplied an answer sheet to colour your answer in.

Ohh ok. I searched it up and it says the test is computer based this year, but I hope it's on paper since it would be easier. What subject would you say needs the most preparation?

If u have no experience at all with puzzles then definitely Abstract Reasoning, its a huge wake up call and a new topic to explore. If the test is computer based that would be a bit interesting but paper is definitely better. If u dont mind me asking what school are u tryna transfer from?

I'm trying to transfer from Xavier college to Penrith high school. It's like a Catholic School. I've heard that selective schools consider your mathematical reasoning results the most, do you know if that's true?

I dont know if thats true but it could be. I did extremely well in the creative writing section, scoring at the top of the top band so around the top 0.5% and I never made it into a school. To be fair I only trialled for one but I still excelled in the writing. I did above average on the mathematical reasoning but not great so they could weigh that section the highest.

Ohh ok. Thanks, and sorry about all the questions 😅
