why is it that everyone thinks that:

very good at maths, but bad at english = intelligent
very good at english, but bad at maths = dumb

that is what people from my school say

cos english is illogical! most who are good at english have lower iq scores than those good at maths even in the language section!

english only scores well becouse the hsc was designed by someone who's good at english

personally i think there is no such thing as intelligence.
i would like to believe that people who are considered "smart" would just have a much more solid understanding of the basic content of a subject. a stronger foundation in other words. which allows them to excel because they know their stuff.
but people who are hardworking, technically from my theory, could become "smart" provided they develop this foundation.
in regards to the situation intially presented, person 1 may have not studied throughly. i can claim that i study 10 hours everyday, but the question actually is how much have you learnt?

Thats is because people who do good at maths and not at english get good Uai's/Atar's
and people who do good at english and bad at maths dont seem to stack up according to the Board?

I agree a balance should be found (Study and brains), i for one havent found it :( I also feel there is a third contributing factor, and that is the asian gene.. Basicly everyone who does good in the HSC either has to be asian or some how start to turn himself/herself asian :) (I for one play online fps games ahahah)

I dont stack up to you James Ruse or city kids in ability/study but i got our schools "Outstanding student" which is out school based DUX system, and we have a secondry award purely for highest ATAR.

As has been said before, with alot of skills subjects; maths, physics you can get by off natural ability, but inevitable the HSC rewards the hard working, kids as a rule of thumb, over lazy smart fucks.

I value those who commit and give it their all - because you really do know these people are trying to get their best possible results. Sure, being smarter is a great trait to have... having an intellectual conversation every now and then saves my life from some of the drugged out drab school chatter all the time in my school.

For the HSC, it depends what you want from it. What you bring to the table, in my opinion, is what you'll get out. There are always going to be lazy arse people who are naturally talented (I have 2 in my classes)... but I work a fair bit harder than them and now I beat them because I want the best possible results.

There will always be someone better and smarter than you in every way... that will be a fact of life. It's always good to know that smarts aren't going to get you through life. They will help you get a job, but they won't help you manage the house, iron and wash up, socialise with people at meetings etc.

Personally, I'd rather be around those who give it their all, and even though their results may not be extremely pleasing, it beats being around arrogant smartarses who play video games their life and smash their academia because of their brilliant memory retension because of their night before study.

Exactly. And at the BoS, the English examiners/teachers are able to effectively debate their side and issues and use techniques and shit to win their opponents over :p

It's why English is compulsory. The maths examiners gave in.... xD

Being intelligent at English is an oxymoron, because English is illogical.
That statement itself is ironic, as it uses an English technique.

God damn, you can never win...

Well there kinda is intelligence. You get smart kids and duller kids... What determines it is how a child is raised, nurtured and their attitude/aptitude for things.

Then again you get random prodigy children who are just way beyond their physical capacity.

This makes no sense how can i study a max of 1/2 hour a day normally less and get higher marks than my best mate who spends most of his time studying, surely he'd get better marks than me i just have more natural ability

You just have the gift of the gab as they call it. You're clearly quite gifted and simply grasp concepts fast and answer the questions in exams properly...
