I'm not to sure if many others are doing this, but I was going to find a friend for each subject and share the workload in preparation for each subjects' exam.

Eg. for English - I'm going to do a plan for the 'into the world' essay, while they will do a plan for the 'distinctively visual' essay. The same for modern, ancient and SOR.

Is this effective and a reliable method of preparation? (particularly history)

Personally, I would not recommend it.

I've found that reading other people's notes is an ineffective way of studying as you are unable to recollect the thought process of composing the notes. Looking at someone's notes results in interpreting them as given so you fail to properly ask questions on why something is correct.

What I would recommend you do is perhaps compose notes and compare them with your friends so you can pick up points you may have missed. It gives you the opportunity to properly shape your lines of argument as you can build the relationship between each other's views.

It's imperative that you understand the thought process of composing a certain essay so whether it be notes or essay plans, the point still stands. If you know how to plan an essay by yourself, if the question comes up in the exam, then you will be able to naturally plan it in your head rather than trying to remember what your friend wrote.

Write an essay plan separately and compare. Critique each others plans so you can figure out the best way to approach a given essay topic.
