We ended up having a 'vote' strangely reminiscent of American 'democracy'. (Few candidates, no stand-outs, imcomplete voter turnout.) and ended up choosing Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life), by those Green Day ruffians.

If you apply the lyrics metaphorically, 'Last Goodbye' by Jeff Buckley could work quite nicely..

This is our last goodbye, I hate to feel the love between us die, but it's over, just say this and then I'll go, you gave me more to live for, more than you'll ever know... This is our last embrace, must I dream and always see your face? Why can't we overcome this wall, baby..It must have been because I didn't know you at all..

Although some people would either call it inappropriate, or simply not know it. (At least at my school. Weird In My School indeed.)

we didnt end up gettin to vote for our graduation song

but we ended up with two...

green day - time of your life (old but very suitable for the occasion!)

and

high - lighthouse family
(old but pretty alright)

the bad thing was....i wished for an upbeat and lively song to end it all....

oh well...

at our farewell disco we had that "life is a highway, i'm gunna ride it all night long etc."
and at our farewell assembly we had a video and the songs were brick - ben folds five, porcelain - moby and that stupid cliched vitamin c song.
and then we had a girl sing an opera song that was really good and then another girl sang burn by tina arena.
and then we had a fella from our year play classical gas... strangely it fitted really well

We were going to have that song on the ad where the girl chucks the craps at her boyfriend and he says 'I'm gonna marry her one day'.
You know.. 'You gotta accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative, and latch on to the affirmative'
I like that one, but someone threw a tantrum and we were stuck with 'Drive' by Incubus...

We had a load of songs

Preso nite:
Man from Snowy River main theme (not the Slim D song)

Final day:
Video -
everywhere by yellowcard (remake of michelle branch)
clubbed to death by rob dougan
star wars imperial march

Assembly -
cheesy uplifiting instrumentals as we entered

The Day You Went Away by wendy matthews (guys ended up ballroom dancing on stage with each other at the end, i will remember that forever)

Then three guys did this awesome medley, altering the lyrics to a bunch of recent songs:
Ronan Keating's wen u say nothing at all - "the smiles on your face let us know that you're leaving"
Avril's complicated ""
enrique's hero "i can be your teacher baby, i can give you a tuesday"
JT's cry me a river "don't cry me a river, schools almost over"
JT's senorita "Now listen, I wanna try some right now
See they don't do this anymore, I'm gonna sing something
And I want the guys to sing with me
They go
"It feels like something's heatin' up, I think I wanna leave school?"
And then the ladies go
"I don't know what I'm thinkin' 'bout, I think I wanna leave too"

There were more in that, but I can't think of them at the moment.

Grad mass (theme "stars") [yes we're a catholic school]
Moby - we are all made of stars
The Calling "thank you"

And finally, what should have been used:
Good Charlotte - Moving On
Natalie Imbruglia - Goodbye
Millencolin - the ballad (used in y10)
michelle branch - goodbye 2 u

i loved that week, just wanna live it again

My school had "Girls just wanna have fun" and "School's out for summer" for the farewell song.

I like the idea of having the Star Wars Imperial March. Very cool.

We went out to Eye of the Tiger.

We all went out like boxers.

It was quite sad.

Closing Time by Semisonic (pics)
Closing time - open all the doors and let you out into the world .
Closing time - turn all the lights on over every boy and every girl .
Closing time - one last call for alcohol , so finish your whiskey or beer .
Closing time - you don't have to go home but you can't stay here .

I know who I want to take me home .
I know who I want to take me home .
I know who I want to take me home .
Take me home ...

Closing time - time for you to go out to the places you will be from.
Closing time - this room won't be open 'til your brothers or you sisters come .
So gather up your jackets , and move it to the exits - I hope you have found a friend .
Closing time - every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.
Yeah ,

I know who I want to take me home .
I know who I want to take me home .
I know who I want to take me home .
Take me home ...

Closing time - time for you to go out to the places you will be from...

I know who I want to take me home .
I know who I want to take me home .
I know who I want to take me home .
Take me home ...

I know who I want to take me home .
I know who I want to take me home .
I know who I want to take me home .
Take me home ...

Closing time - every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end...
