lol, this guy i know (who went to a single sex school) asked some girl he hardly knew out to his formal. Things were going fine until she dumped him and starting flirting and dancing with other guys throughout the night.

owch!

this, people, is the key reason why you DON'T bring randoms to formals

ps. nice story Cykologi_gal, but the thread starter's male. unless he's really gay, no guys are going to make him 'feel beautiful, wanted, "fit in" etc'

I'm going to the yr 12 formal solo and so are my friends, not only does it save the cost of buying an extra ticket, but its going to be heaps better not being dragged down by a partner :D I go to a coed anyways so its not like we need to bring random people along.

I went by myself in yr 12 as did most of my friends and half the grade, it was much better I could spend as much time as I wanted with my friends and didnt have to worry about a date and whether he was having a bad time, which was wat happened to those who did have dates. Its no big deal and no one cares :)

Yeah at our school its more of a thing NOT to ask some1. Every1 jus rocks up by themselves and hangs out with whoever so they aint stuck with the same person for the whole night but its not as if we hav a set rule. 12 wks u got it at a wierd time-i thought evry1 would hav it a couple of weeks after hsc or sumthin like that

For my year 12 formal, I asked my next-door neighbour who doesn't goto my old school. She knew some of my friends so I thought she wouldn't be too left out... And the whole night, she was up there dancing and socialising with friends, they thought she was fuckin awesome!

She was into my formal more then me lol. I don't dance much.

My formal is in twelve weeks time and I still don't know anyone whom I could ask out.

Question is, has anyone gone to formals by themselves?
Went with a good friend in Yr 10, had lots of fun and wouldn't have done it any other way.

Went alone in Yr 12, had a total ball will fellow partner-less friends, and wouldn't have done it any other way.

It's all about having a good time - NOT appearances. :)

Yeh it's in twelve weeks.

For some really odd reason, people in my school (Melbourne Grammar) seem to think that going to the formal solo is perhaps one of the lamest thing one can do in one's school career.
i thought guys from melb grammar would be up for this type of stuff?

who cares if u dont have a partner? it doesnt mean anything. just have fun with or without. if u find someone u think u might have a better time with between now and formal time, then go for it. but if ur gonna ask someone, do it so they at least have a bit of time to consider & get organised about going :)

Year 10 was without, and heaps of fun.

Year 12 was with, but it was just a good friend who had left our school a year before. So it was good he got to see everyone and got along with them all.

Uuuuuummm well, for year 10 my parents didn't want me going alone so they organised a family friend for me to take. I hadn't seen him since we were both 5 years old but fortunately he turned out to be really nice! Except he danced a bit weirdly...and there was some awkwardness because in the space of an hour I had to learn everything and teach him everything that had happened to us in the past...ten years?

I didn't go to the year 11 semi-formal (parents wouldn't allow me) but for year 12 I'll probably take a good friend. Hopefully I'll be 18 by the time so my parents won't try and arrange another partner! I'd like to have some say in the matter this time.

I guess it's your choice, but I'm against taking random people - if I had a choice I would NOT take that guy again, not that I have anything against him, but it was so very scary.
edit: I just forgot to answer the question! I think going solo is okay - it means you don't have any "responsibilities" like organising their transport etc - but if you want to dance the night away with someone then it's probably good to take a friend as opposed to having to snitch another person's (they might take it badly, like what happened at my year 10 formal with a good friend of mine)

And it's not everyone's cup of tea but in the very very unlikely event I get a boyfriend in time for my year 12 formal (in December **sigh**) I probably wouldn't take him anyway, just because I would much rather spend the night with one of my best friends, and because I'd be scared we'd break up in an ugly fashion and then I might be tempted to destroy all the photographs of the two of us...but who knows? Maybe things will change after the HSC...

I think there are many misconceptions about taking partners to formals.
When I had my year 10 formal heaps of people would ask who was I was taking and when I told them I wasn’t taking anyone they couldn’t understand why I was going alone letalone why I wanted to go alone.
Personally, I don’t get the concept of taking a partner unless it’s someone you’re dating/interested in. Maybe it’s an outdated American dance tradition or something? (Blame ‘Grease’!) ...Okay, now I’m just making things up.

The way I see it, a chick that rocks up solo yet confident is much classier than a chick that’s had to hunt down the first guy she sees for fear of social mockery. I knew a girl who was like that and the end result was a guy who wore a white tux with an electric blue tie…

People from co-ed schools should refrain from posting. Theres no need to take a date. However, in my situation, when you go to a school with 200 males, a date is usually necessary. Or if youre ugly like me, make sure someone else has 3 or 4 dates.
