Going to CSU Wagga in '07 - Got the Cottages!

Hi all

I thought I might share this here, might be an interesting read for a few others in a similar position as I.

I've been accepted to CSU Wagga Wagga this year, and yet, I come from Sydney (Penrith), which consequently means a move down to the country. By all means I am excited, and looking forward to it!

I am not a recent school leaver, I finished my HSC in 2004, and for the past two years, have been studying IT at UTS.

My my, what an ordeal that was! Doing well in IPT and SDD back in the HSC days, naturally IT was the next thing to move onto. But man, what a culture shock that was!

Won't go into details, but suffice to say, I felt my creativity was banned and my personality a threat. Rather than finish this degree and sulk about how bad the job is, I thought stuff this, I'm going elsewhere, and that direction was the arts.

After much research, talking to lots of people, and a few setbacks with applying for the City ones, I've been accepted into CSU, immediately sent my acceptance, accommodation and payment, and I'm certainty I will enjoy this.

Don't know about the rest of you, I'm looking forward to no traffic, no crowds, no homeless nutters, no 1hr train commutes.... good people, good course and good town and a good time! And I won't be turning back!

I've applied to stay at the Butlers Hall, followed by those self catered joints in South Wagga. I thought, for myself, too many shenanigans involved with off-campus accomodation, and I think for a new start, having equal peers at accomodation would help me alot.... as well as the catering!

Oh, and if you're wondering what course I'm doing? I'll be one of those technical artsy fartsy Bachelor of Arts in Television Production students :) I'm stoked, although I did have images of me walking around with those funky oversized art canvas bags.

Anyhow, enough chatter.

*TV Production, brothers and sisters... how many are usually in this course per year? I'm a tad worried it's going to be like my previous IT course, where there's like 200 people, but they're all nasty and to themselves kinda folk
*Anyone else from Sydney, or elsewhere really, coming to study at Wagga this year? I know NO ONE in the Riverina, so I'm sure we can help each other establish drinking buddies.
*Any BoS folks here who are presently at CSU? Is it true that like Kangaroos and other native animals wondering around the place?
*Accommodation. I read they do it by some lucky-dip lottery ballot, although does anyone know what the numbers are for folks applying for accomodation compared to the numbers avaliable?
*Employment. Is it easy getting a part-time/casual job in town? I have the faith that Wagga, being 'the largest inland town', employment opportunities should be rife? (Although I also had this facid fantasy of getting an RSA and working in a pub!).
*Internet. I believe they have the internet now connected to Wagga? :)

Thanks for any assistance provided. Point of no return now!

Proddies (i.e. TV Production) - an interesting collection of folk. Generally fairly fruity but they seem harmless enough. Not sure of exact numbers but I'm pretty sure it'd be more around the 50-100 mark rather than 200. And all very friendly :)
Sydneyites - There's a fair few of them around, especially from Western Syd (hell I'd be trying to get away from there too :) ). I'm sure you'll find someone during O-Week (if you're attending) and if not, you'll definitely find someone to drink with anyways.
BoS folks at CSU - indeedy, I be one of these myself. Yes, it's true, there are kangaroos. You generally see them when walking over the hill (from accom. to classes) but they also frequent the cottages that are right up the back of the hill (Siberia). Every now and then (it happened to me twice in the last year) you may get sheep too. Farmers shortcut through the uni sometimes when moving them. I've been late to class before because of it - they don't move for cars.
Accommodation - CSU has a ballot system for rooms so you may or may not get in. First year students are generally given preference (a larger percentage of rooms is allocated to them) over other students so beyond your first year there's a 50/50 chance you'll be on a waiting list. If you don't get in and you're absolutely desperate though, CSU has emergency accommodation they can stick you in.
Employment - I don't like your chances :) It's a uni town - everyone wants a job. Occassionally jobs do pop up but your best bet is to see if you can get a transfer from a current job (if you work at Coles/Woolies or something) or if someone you know can get you a job. As for bar work - really hard to get. Pretty much every uni student that turns up has an RSA I'm afraid :)
Internet - yes. I believe that was sarcastic but yes. There's the internal CSU network which is free of charge to access however when you view external pages (i.e. Hotmail etc.) it charges you 2.75 cents per meg downloaded.
Hope that helps! See you during O-Week if you're there...I'll be one of the O-Week leaders so will probably come across you at some stage :)

Good! You are correct, I am relocating to Wagga because I am trying to get away from Penrith. I am assuming there'll be a few other Westie refugees also.

Is it common for alot or afew people to get left out? As much as I'm looking forward to this all, my main concern at present is whether I have somewhere to stay if I rock up down there on the 19th.

So if most uni folk in Wagga can't or don't work... they party or socialise most of the time? :)

(Actually, I wouldn't mind that alternative to work)

Unfortunately, I've had to give up my job of two years here for this move (I had worked in a juice bar/sandwhich bar in the CBD), and unfortunately, I don't think they have a franchise in Wagga :mad1:

I'm also off to Wagga Wagga this year. Ironically, doing a Bachelor of IT. I started Primary Education at Dubbo last year, and, well, we'll not go into details. Just that I don't want to be there anymore. I actually moved from Richmond out to Mudgee just before uni started last year, so I got a permanent way out of Western Sydney. :D

And is the 19th the start of O-Week? I hope and pray that it is, because currently I'm trying to cram a lot of stuff into my life, and that extra week would really be a help. (Our house is being built, and Mum's expecting me to help a lot with packing/unpacking/moving furniture across our block from the old house to the new house)

Oh, and I'm definitely in with the whole drinking buddies thing. I do actually know one person from here that's at uni in Wagga Wagga, but we haven't talked in about 4 years, and supposedly she spends all her time with her boyfriend. (I don't think she even came home for Christmas, but that's another story)

I'm in similar dilemmas.

Although I'm sure you'll have success in IT if you're in for it, it took me two years to realise it wasn't for me. That, and many contributing factors of urban isolation, considering UTS is smack bang in the CBD.

My folks wanted to move to be closer to the city, so that we don't have to travel far for work or uni.

However, those plans sorta got shelved the moment I told them Wagga Wagga :worried: :)

Do you drink beer? Look as though the folk who've contacted me offline all drink spirits. My goodness!

Hi all, once again.

I got approved for On-Campus accommodation in Wagga Wagga! I'm stoked, excited and looking forward to all the shenanigans I can get up to

Who else is coming? I'm in the Self-Catered cottages joint, where I'm assuming most CSU folk are.

Are fireworks allowed?

Don't be silly, as if I would. Canberra is a tad far to drive to.

Yeah I'm in cottages this year. I got 30 weeks again which is a bit of a pain (which most people don't realise until they have to start moving their crap out every holidays).
I know you're kidding but I wouldn't even think about fireworks - security would be onto you in no time simply for the fire risk. Not sure if you've actually visited the Wagga campus but if you haven't - it's insanely dry and all the cottages back onto a very dry patch of bushland that goes over the hill. They'd eat you up :)

There is a spot behind the Marties Chapel that security can't see from the roads... Great place for fire twirling...

I most definitely drink beer. And most whatever else you put in front of me. Oh, and as a matter of fact, I also got accommodation, at Butler Halls.

Canberra's not that far...as soon as I told my friend in Melbourne that I was going to uni at Wagga Wagga, she insisted that I drive down to Melbourne to see her at the first available opportunity...if I had seen her in the last 5 years I probably would've told her to piss off, but as it were, I caved. =P

Cottages are pretty good. I was in them last year at Dubbo, they're not bad. They're not too old.

Cottages in Wagga are pretty good. Half are oldish (but not delapidated or anything). Half are newish. About 5 or 6 were only built in the last 6 months :)
They aren't in the middle of nowhere either - All the cottages are on one side of the road and walking distance to everything. Theres 8 bedrooms in each, a bathroom at each end, and a shared kitchen and common area.
Hope that helps :)

I dunno, 2.2 cents per meg doesn't sound too bad. Could be worse. Like the 11 cents.

Having spent two years in IT, I reckon my health would improve by living without the internet.

(And for those who read the internal CSU forums... without TV!)
