fuck the mars volta.

listen to dalek, especially their collaboration w/ the krautrock band faust. they're experimental but aren't complete shit like anticon.

beta erko is pretty terrible, but slightly interesting (aussie rap over noisecore/glitch)

three 6 mafia. for realz.

I mean, those are examples of what I guess you'd call "experimental" hiphop.

For just plain good hiphop, I suggest that everyone download the track 'Scapegoat' by Atmosphere.

I said experimental because the dude was looking for experimental hiphop that doesn't use traditional drum patterns.

But yes, it is alternative hiphop.

And good hiphop.

if you're looking for alternative/experimental hip hop i would look more towards the stones throw label than def jux.

aesop rock really shits me, seems like he's just trying to throw big words together, trying to be way too profound and just ends up with a shitty flow and really fragmented sound. cannibal ox, company flow, and el-p are ok as far as defjux is concerned, and get into rjd2 for beats/instrumentals.

but you should really check out the stones throw stable, madlib, j dilla, oh no, madvillain, mf doom, lord quas, med etc. i find it to be alot more enjoyable.

also other stuff im listening to atm: organized konfusion, pharoahe monch, tribe, big l, lord finesse, masta ace, raekwon

Atmos and Illogic are Rhyme Sayers, only aes rock is Def Jux.

And the dude was looking for shit with alternative drum patterns to your standard 4/4 boom bap.

While dudes like MF are on some wierd shit flow wise which I generally find dope, but they usually still flow over normal hiphop beats apart from when Doom has had a few too many shrooms.
