Hey,

Im in year twelve and was looking at doing a BMathFin next year. Im an idiot for not doing three unit maths for my HSC its just i never knew i would become interested in maths that much until year 12 when we got into calculus and stuff.

Anyways i get good marks in 2 unit but will i struggle with the work in maths 187/188? Will i need to try and learn the 3 unit course or something like that in the 5 months before uni?

The uni says that 3 unit is not assumed but recommended.

Anywayz any help from someone whos done those subjects (im sure many have) would be great.

Also if any1 could post past notes/questions from those subjects so i can see the difficulty.

Thanks

There is a bridging course for people who haven't done much calculus like you.

But, it really depends on how quickly you can learn things. Cause you can't really depend on past knowledge, escpecially when you get the 2nd year maths and find it has little relation to first year.

What do you expect your 2unit marks to be?

Umm im not sure- ive gone really well in all assessments so far usually about 95-96 % , however i guess my trials will give me a better indication.

I didnt know wollongong offer a bridging course in 3 unit as there is nothing about it on there website. They only appear to offer bridging in bio, chem or physics.

If they do that would be great- although as u said, i guess a lot of the HSC maths becomes less important (excpet the basic concepts) once u start specialising after 1st year in more specific maths topics which be all new stuff whether u did 3 unit or not.

It is possible to tackle 187/188 with 2U maths - I know a few friends who have. The main disadvantage you will have is that some 3U integration and differation is covered in 187 but not in the depth it would have been in 3U. 188 has nothing in it from 3U.

So my advice would be start of with 187, if it is too much, drop back to 141 (equivalent subject, just need to get a credit in it to do second year maths). If you are worried, look at the 3U integration, differation and maybe a bit of trig

yeah i do math187 now, i did 3U (decent at 2U, i wasnt good in 3U).

you seem to be really good at two unit so you should be ok. half the subject is completely new (at least it is/was for me) anyway. you will just have to put a little more work in than others around you.

it will definitely help, like chinesefireball said to look at three unit differentiation and integration, and a bit of trig, because they do go through that in a bit of depth and i know it helped me as i did 3U. the rest you should pick up fine with 2U knowledge.

good luck!

You could do MATH141/142 instead. You'll need to get a credit in MATH142 to continue along the maths path, however (if you get a P, you could take MATH162 in summer to attempt to get the C/D/HD so you can take second year maths in second year).
