How does a force gauge work? I know Force equals mass times acceleration.

When I try to exert a steady force on the gauge (no acceleration), it still gives me a reading of however many kgs of force I exerted. How is this?

Actually, kg wt or newtons lol

There actually is an acceleration/force that you are applying to the gauge but the gauge exerts equal and opposite force to stop your motion (by Newton's Third law) - no net force (and net zero acceleration).
Since the gauge experiences force and pressure that you've exerted, it can measure the force.

Think about it in this way. If you have a friend trying to push you, but you resist being pushed, there is no motion because you are exerting your force to stop being pushed (if it perfectly works). However, you do experience a force from your friend as you can even feel it.
