I listen to music, I know if I like it or not, and I don't think being able to say "omg I recognise this pi/e^12 time signature!" is going to help me appreciate it. That said I do have a shitload of stuff from that list (as I suspected mostly progressive rock/metal) and do see the use of it if you're studying/playing music.

It's not so much as "oh its 12/8 time signature gives it so much meaning!" but more like that you understand it a bit more and therefore can appreciate it more. It's more about whether you have an understanding of rhythm. Some people can in an immense way, some people outright can't.

Much the same way as if you know where beat 1 falls. Most people can tell when it does. I know people who can't and it makes a lot of sense when you realise they can't actually dance. It's just a matter of how well you can appreciate rhythm.

I think my appreciation of music started with My Sharona. It's got a sweet little key change in the middle there from Bb to C and back again.

Then I discovered Pink Floyd's Money. By then I was playing bass and I came across the time change from 7/4 to 4/4 and back to 7/4 when I was concentrating. I probably wouldn't have noticed it.

Radiohead's Paranoid Android, in my opinion, takes the cake. A great example of indulgence.

And then ... there's Fat Boy Slim at the end of Praise You. How the hell does that work?
