Is FINS1613 a first semester course for first year actuarial students? The class timetable is looking pretty full atm.......

I've noticed that as well! I really hope those full classes are reserved for the actuarial students.

As ACTL1122 won't be able to run (assuming it must run during 1st year which I think it is)

Usually when a class is 'full' then it is. They might open up new spot though.

no you can take FINS1613 whenever you want. I am doing this coming semester as a 2nd year student

Nah it changed. FINS1613 is required first year first semester for the new actuarial degree.

First semester you have to take

• ACTL1101
• ECON1101
• MATH1151
• FINS1613

Second semester you have to take

• ACTL1122
• ECON1102
• MATH1251
• Anything

You have to do this as ACTL1122 is only offered in semester two and it's prerequisites are FINS1613 and ACTL1101. However if you follow my link you can replace ACTL1122 with ACCT1501 and ACCT1511 if you want to keep the option of a transfer to B of Commerce open. Then the courses you take would look like
First semester you have to take

• ACTL1101
• ECON1101
• MATH1151
• ACCT1501

Second semester you have to take

• ACCT1501
• ECON1102
• MATH1251
• Anything

If you're 100% set of ACTL then this is probably an inferior choice.

You have to do this as ACTL1122 is only offered in semester two and it's prerequisites are FINS1613 and ACTL1101. This new plan arguably makes it much harder to change from an actuarial major to another major within the ASB after first year.

Perhaps they're trying to lower the actuarial drop out rate...

Pretty much as bladeys said, ACTL1122 which runs in second semester in 1st year has FINS1613 as a prerequisite so following this logic, fins1613 must be done in first sem.

Normally they'll open the spots for you if you definitely have to do the course.

Few weeks ago I was selecting time for one of my core course but they were all full and I definitely need to do the course in following semester otherwise I might not graduate on time.
So I wrote a e-mail to school and in less than one hour time they replied back saying that although the class is really full but they managed to put me into the class.

I guess this is what's good about UNSW

Yeah it is. You need to take it such that you can take ACTL1122 in 2nd sem.

They will open more spots for FINS1613 soon.

i dont think they have, i have been checking every 30 min (they could get full within 30 min though)
