I'd definently agree with many of thoses favs, v.good taste, namely:

Shawshank - couldnt be better for a first time watcher, highly recommended

Silence of the lambs - classic thriller/horror, no need for gruesome violence, just brilliant directing, film score, and of course acting on the part of Athony Hopkins, really scary.

Fight Club - Ed Norton, another v.good actor and another spectacular ending for a film, watch it over again, and youll pick up all the hints and
Idiosyncrasies, v clever.

Pulp Fiction - Perfect connection of sub plots intertwined into the main, always watchable.

Also, a personal favourite of mine (only mentioned modestly) is Starwars, particularly the original trilogy. I believe it underestimated for what it is, simple story and plot, with the itelligent plot twists, some iconic to film history, eg. "Luke I am your father". To watch these films (and many films before our time) one has to position themselves at the time the films were released. Starwars created cinamatic history and smashed many records of the time, someone once quoted to me ( an extensive film buff themselves, farmore then I will ever be) that Starwars [was] 'beyond its time, it propelled film making into a new era, it remians the pioneer of modern films'. I don't consider myself a 'nerd', in fact Im far from it (take a quick squiz at my subjects, lol, and youll see why) but i generally regard these as great films.

I'm bored enough to add reasons, because it's 4:30 am and I am nowhere near ready for bed.

300. I felt obscenely patriotic afterward, and still do.
Titanic. That soundtrack is fantastic, and then there's Billy Zane.
The Passion of the Christ. Well, enough said.
Serenity. I love this movie, this ensemble, everything.
Brick. This was so well done. Very violent, but so very well done. A great indie film.
Amelie. So adorable!
The Departed. One of Scorsese's best.
The Lord of the Rings. A classic.
The Red Violin. Intense story as well as the music.
Chocolat. Johnny Depp and chocolate, anyone?
The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Well, it's just a jump to the left...

Yeah, I agree.

The tagline for the movie was "There's no gene for the human spirit" which just sums it all up nicely.
After reading what you guys had to say about Gattacca, I went out and bought it. I kinda expected sometihng futuristic but after watching realised it was more than that. the whole idea of a new level of discrimination really brought home the fact that real discriminations like racism and all that still exist and people still judge others on that basis. Good movie, worth every cent.:)

Now there's a choice that really sticks out amongst a bunch of blockbusters and a couple of classics. How did you get around to watching it? :)
